1980 Eagle 10. I finally located the power steering reservoir. I was actually looking in the short bay on drivers side. Air compressor. Anyways, if the bus is not running, I can move the steering wheel 1/4 turn with no resistance, then it becomes super hard to turn. Is this common? Thanks

I can turn my wheel about 45 degrees each way before resistance.

I had a bad wandering problem when I bought my coach 5 years ago. I took it to a bus mechanic and had some serious worn out parts in radius rod bushing and the axle hanger arms. It appeared that Houston Metro never greased the bus. After $5000 worth of Eagle parts from Jefferson truck, I had everything fixed.

I still wasn't satisfied with the handling, so I took it to a truck alignment. He said my toe in and casting were correct, so no problem there.

I then pulled the Ross box and sent it to BAB steering for a rebuild. $800 later I had a rebuilt gear box. Now, I reistalled this myself and had to get the steering arm back on exactly as removed. Luckily, I did it correctly.

Come to find out most of my problem (outside the worn front end parts) lay in a steering column modification I made to a VIP steering column. This is a whole other story.

I don't know if this helps you diagnose your problem, but if you have a bad wandering coach, I recommend you have that front end looked at by a bus guy or alignment guy. My front end was really worn out and near collapse. I'm lucky the front wheel assembly didn't fall off.

(Where's TD when we need him?)

With MCIs, that's normal. If the engine's off, the power steering
isn't operating, and the play will be 1/4 turn or more.
