Running my V730 I look for 150 winter and 185 max for summer.

Your safe at 250° anytime but max is 300°....beginning to burn oil ....turn to brown or yellow (no wear compound) transparent color. Been there doing chassis-dyno-lap work at GM.

Biggest heat source is torque converter until in lock-up position.

I have not done study with Allison HD740 but my feeling is most of the time be in 200° or less.

Be nice to see others result reported. Thanks

Our 740 runs about the same as the water temperature or slightly lower, usually around 165-180. Jack

Jack is right on the money. The transmission cooler is in the same housing as the oil cooler. This warms the transmission quickly when starting out and keeps it about the same temp as the engine. On a pull without the torque converter locked up, the temp will rise depending on how long or how hard it is working. The top end of 300 as mentioned by Sojourner is a good maximum. The important thing is how fast it cools down after it goes back into lockup. It should drop back down after a mile or so. That will tell you if the cooler is doing its job.

The reason I ask is while towing my Chevy Tahoe my temp stayed right on 200 for the trip. I have not noticed my temp running this high before, usually around 170 so I was wondering if I had a problem.

Evan,
I noticed your email name "Fireman 10b", do you work for a Fire Department at Station 10, B Shift? What department? I work for Sarasota County FD, Sarasota, FL (Station 73 C Shift) until 12/05. Yes retirement is approaching fast. The owner of this board works for a FD in Canada.
The extra load of the Tahoe may be causing the higher operating tempature. Did the engine tempature also increase?

My Prevost with an Allison 5 speed runs the same as water temperature, 180 degres, most of the time but goes above 200 on long climbs. It has not gotten to 250. I believe when it goes above water temperature it is just telling us that the transmission is creating more heat and is a warning to monitior it until it is back to water temp.
