Just have it rebuilt. Most shops that do truck alternators and starters can handle it. Much cheaper than just buying a replacement.

Dave unless your starter is giving you trouble one thing that you might want to do is find another starter the same as the one in your bus and just carry it as a spare. this is what i do i carry a spare , you can go a long ways without things such as lighs ,heat, wipers, even brakes if it is just to move it in an emergancy but if you cannot start it then you are in big trouble is the way that i look at it.

I've had a starter fail 800 miles from home & sure was glad I didn't have an automatic. It cost me $20
to get it started by being towed around a parking lot but if I'd had an automatic I'd have been SOL. Mel's right, especially if you've got an automatic.

I'd get a remanufactured one.
I'd get a Delco reman.
Not necessary to buy new - too much $$$$$$$.
Rebuilt - depends on the rebuilder, some only replace the defective component and then paint it.
Remanufactured - all internal parts are new, or equal to new standards.
I too recommend to keep a spare one onboard, especially if you've got an automatic transmission.

If you put a new or reman starter on do you still need spare?? How often do these starters give up the ghost?? R. Chandler

What causes the early death of a starter is low voltage and/or long cranking times of very cold engines. In warm climate and an engine that starts quickly, the starter will last the life of the engine.

The low voltage problem comes up on a regular basis on the board and a search will bring up lots of info. The only solution to a very cold engine is some kind of pre-heat such as an electric block heater or a Webasto type of coolant heater.

An N engine in good condition will start on half a turn.

Being a mechanic, and naturally curious, I'd tear the thing down and find out what went wrong before I'd buy another starter new or rebuilt.

Very often there is not much wrong with the starter itself... perhaps the solenoid has gone bad.

It probably is worth having a diesel mechanic at least give your starter a look to see if it is salvagable.

I recently ran across a new rebuilt starter that wouldn't work... It was given to me and in tearing it down everything looked perfect...

Until I found out the wiring inside was missing a 5 cent insulator and it was shorting directly to ground!

Always check for bad/corroded ground(s) first.

Here's a very recent thread: http://www.busnut.com/bbs/messages/11/10481.html

Jerry-- I may be wrong but I am pretty sure you can tow-start an engine using an Allison automatic. Next time I am on a hill I'll kill the engine and try it.
