1st ? How many gallons? You can look in my sign if you like but lets say a mci9 no windows how much paint? Somewhere here on the net I saw an article on stripping the paint (you can guess where). If I use this method of paint removal (power washing) will it hurt the window seals and S/S ? All the estimates I got were about $3,000 more than I thought it was worth. I don't want to ROLL it, I want to spray it base coat/clear coat urethane.Lets go, winter is comming. |

I used 5 galllons. A guy who I was considering before I decided to do it myself said that base/clear on a big rig like this would be a nightmare...which might account for some of the crazy prices you guys are getting. He recommended a single stage polyurethane so thats what I did. I had $600 in materials and it looks pretty good. One of these days I'll get some photos online. Ross |

Ross- What brand, where'd you buy it, how much $$ per gal, and can they formulate any color? Mucho' thankso' in advance. (btw, I used poly with a brush on an antique banister. It came out perfect! No drips, orange peel, or layer) |

two dogs, what is a D.A. This subject interests me because I do not think painting a bus should cost some of the exorbitant prices some of you quote... |

D.A. is "Disability Artwork". Painting-disabled individuals apply paint using a fan apparatus. On non-ferrus metal surfaces, they call it "Stanless Painting". I hope that helps. |

DA may mean "double action" as in sanders, usually air driven since they use that motive power for wet sanding. |

The brand is Nason Fulthane made by Dupont. It lays down nice and wears like iron. It can be wet sanded and buffed but it's not really nessessary. It looks pretty good right out of the gun. I think I paid around $50/gallon plus activator and reducer. I got it at a store called Sanel Auto Parts. No idea if they are national. I also got it for the body shop price. The body shop let me buy it under thier account. I used GM code 12, which is white. My plan was to use that as a base thyen do some grapgics over it. I'm still undecided on the graphics, so the bus is still white two years later. They can mix any color. The body shop just did my friends F350 in it's original factory "red". My only regret is not using the right primer. I should have used a good epoxy primer. Instead I used zinc chromate. It's holding up well, but I've had to touch up a couple spots where the ladder scuffed the paint off to the primer. It looks like the adhesion wasn't that good in those areas. Could be I missed those spots with the sander before final painting also, which isn't hard to do when you're working with something so big. Ross |

D.A. is a dual action sander...the high prices are due to preparation,(getting the surface ready to be painted)..paint remover is a NIGHTMARE..have seen many cars ruined BEYOND repair.I would not do the base coat/clear coat. |

I suggest acrylic enamel...the lighter the color, the less imperfections (dents)will show & the better heat reflection...you DO NOT have to remove old paint ,unless it is flakeing off.... |

Ross, As you have found out, zinc chromate is not a good primer. It is a great corrosion preventer which is its strong point on aluminum. If it is used as a primer it must be applied very thin, so thin you can still see the Al. Most people put it on way too thick. |
