I don’t know if many of you know about or follow the Adventures of George and Ms. Tioga, but he’s this infectiously happy codger that’s been drycamping his way across the West for nearly three years now. He’s kind of a hero of mine, because he documents his travels and his feelings so uniquely.

Anywho, he’s never paid to camp, so his blog is interesting, as well as informative to the wannabe “vagabond”. I’m considering doing this for a few of our nights of our upcoming San Diego trip… more for the experience (and freedom) than the savings, although these resort-area trips tend to bleed us of cash like a faucet, so saving a few buck$ would be nice.

George has done his “gypsy” routine in SD, so he has already giving me some geographic ideas. We've spent our share of overnights at rest stops and Wal-Marts, but this "ups the ante", I guess... free-camping in resort areas.

Also, a bus is more conspicuous and less maneuverable than his class-C, obviously. So, I’d like to know if anybody’s done something similar in their bus, or has any “reservations” for this would-be vagabond family.

As far as paid camping, once we're free of the conference hotel, we're going to take our chances on the Silver Strand SB... but it's like the lottery this time of year. We did the Campland on the Bay "experience" two years ago, and might do it again if we must... but it's very $$$ for the 300 s.f. treeless campsite you get. For the curious, here's our Beta 1.0 Breakneck Itinerary BTW, we travel toadless, so we'll rely on public trans and our bicycles.

Brian,

Be advised that Silver Strand is now $26 per night, at least as of April. Still, it's hard to beat in that area.

Here is our blog entry from our visit:

$26 for drycamping seems outrageous until one sees where it is... then, it's a bargain. I'd love to go to sleep with the mighty Pacific roaring out my windows. We'll see how lucky we are getting a spot in there. It's good to know that they lock it down by 8pm. We'll likely be out exploring the island after that, so we'll be on mtn. bikes sounds like.

I've always liked your blog, too, Sean. And your bus! Wow.

Thanks,
bb

Actually with a nice looking bus that looks like a professional conversion you are probablyless likely to be bothered than in a class C. They don't know who is inside, so there may be a tendancy to not interfere in case it is some one important. The worst I ever did was to pay $5 to park at a truck stop because the local shopping center would not allow 7 hrs parking including shopping at their stores.

We fulltime in our MCI 8 and spend about half of our time dry camped everywhere from roadside rest areas to Wally World, Flying J, and the many free campgrounds in the country. Our overall camping costs average under $5 a night. We publish an RV newspaper and I teach classes in camping on the cheap at RV rallies across the country. We have some free campgrounds listed on our website at www.gypsyjournal.net
