Hey Fellas, I found out yesterday that I've got a bad blower on our coach. Saturday on our way home I stopped to fuel up for the next morning. While doing so I made a "walk a round" checking tires and bay doors. When I got to the back of the coach I heard a unusual knocking sound coming from the engine area. It wasn't a constant thing , but about every 30 seconds or so. Luckily I wasn't but about 6 miles from home. So I eased on home and shut it down. I checked the oil and found it had used about 1 gallon of oil in our 300 mile trip. I had a guy come out Monday to start trying to fine the problem. First we pulled the turbo hoping to find a bad bearing or something. Nope, the turbo looked and felt fine. He came back yesterday and dug a little deeper (inspection plate) and found fine metal shavings. So now we're leaning toward the fact that the blower had gone bad. I'm pretty sure this is what it will turn out to be. Looking back, the gallon of oil used, abnormal smoking when pulling off frm a redlight and the aluminum shavings....pretty sure it's gonna be the blower. I called around today to get some prices. Williams Detriot wanted $700.00 for the blower plus a $600.00 core charge. I called another place that I have used before and they quoted me a price of $400.00 for the blower and a $500.00 core charge. I just pray that my blower housing will be rebuildable. I'm a little leary of driving it the 30 + miles to his shop. So I called today to find out what it will cost me to have it towed. I was told to have it towed the 30 + miles will cost $450.00. I think I'd rather spend the $450.00 on towing than take a chance on having to spend $9,000.00-$10,000.00 on a engine. I'll keep everyone posted next week of the results. We'll be leaving out tomorrow morning (with the trailer) and won't be back until Sunday night. So everyone that prays...please keep us in your prayers. Glenn Tallulah Falls, Ga. 1984 MC-9 |

You may have more than just a blower bad by now. I lost mine a couple of years ago when the rotors trashed out and the blower drive self destructed. The resulting aluminum and other metal shavings ended up all through the engine. I found galded aluminum etched into the pistons, liners and even into the bearings. The end effect is a complete out of frame rebuild or replacement of the engine. Sorry just never heard of "only" the blower going bad and not taking out everything downstream from it eventually. Just replacing it probably will be a waste of time and money as the engine is damaged now. |
