I am sure this has been asked many times, but I just figured out that the 24 V Chassis batteries are not charged by anything but the engine alternator. Would the easist way to keep chassis batteries charged be to buy a 24 V charger that goes to float when charged? Really feel dumb about this one. larry 4905 |

I assume you are concerned with keeping them up while parked. I used a small automatic 24v one for that, worked well when parked for months at a time. A Dayton brand one was my favorite. |

I use two 12 volt Battery Tender chargers (most likely for the same reasons that Don mentioned). They aren't useful for charging low batteries, but seem to do OK for maintaining them. They cost about $20-25 each. |

Don Yes it would be to keep the charge when parked. The batteries went down when the tail lite gremlin arrived at my house and turned on tail lites with switch off. Do you know chain outlet who may sell the Dayton brand. Would like to leave charger hooked up and pluged in all the time. larry 4905 |

Graingers sells Dayton brand. I pulled a really dumb stunt with mine, just alligator clips to the battery and hung it in the battery compartment. Once when I started it up, which I done monthly when sitting, the surge of start combined with the clips arcing slightly on the battery posts, blew one of my batteries up! What a mess, acid and battery plastic all over the place. Hard wire it or place the clips away from the explosive gases |

If you have a vanner equalizer, you only need one 12V cahrger - place it across either battery and both will be equally charged. Doug St Louis MC9 |

Doug, You want to charge the high side battery with the Vanner, and draw on the low side. Then the Vanner will work properly. I had problems with charging the low side (12v to ground). After significant discussion with Vanner, we identified the problem. Ed Roelle Flint, MI |

I onyl know that I have a Heart inverter with Trace panels, I think. I am not familiar with Vanner or the high side battery. I do know whenthe batteries went dead I unhooked the ground on ground to positive posts and hooked a 12 V charger one at a time and charged the batteries. Thot hard wiring 24 V charger would be easy. larry 4905 |

Hi All This information isn't specific to Larrys question but I found a cool web site that answers alot of battery information questions of all kinds. I assume the information is accurate but I would monitor it and use accordingly. It is http://www.batterytender.com. Rob 91 Prevost Missouri |

I use a 6 amp 24 volt automatic charger that I found in a surplus store/pawn shop for $25 and it works great. There are 24 volt transformer style mini chargers at some of the electronics places that are used with industrial equipment that would work fine. I found that you can also find a 24 volt golf cart chargers (automatic style) for almost nothing that would work also. All you have to do is look around at flea markets and industrial surplus places. Typically a 1 to 6 amp charger is all thats needed to maintain a set of batteries and will actually add enough charge overnight to get you going if your batteries get low. |

Ooops Sorry. Brain didn't register the 220 v rating. The same company (Deltran) makes both voltages. In fact they are located 1 1/2 miles from me, I may go over there and see what I can find available surplus... Sorry again.... I tried anyway... |

If you can get a deal on some of them, let me know, I would be interested, those are nice units. All the best David, Bob |
