This spring I had my MCI 9 serviced "full" and had never noticed black smoke from the exaust till after the service. It had little use this last winter. I felt perhaps an injector was not working good. I added a lucas fuel supplement. It still smokes under heavy load only. This is an 8v71 normal asperated. Any ideas? |

Black indicate either to much fuel or not enough air. I assume you have a paper air filter, so check resistance indicater. I am assuming you are not in the mountains. |

Modulate with the "go pedal". Let off the throttle and the black smoke should subside. Such a case is quite normal. Up where I live at "mile high" (with my 8v71N) it's very easy to blow black smoke, so I watch the exhaust carefully. DD's only add fuel at throttle, not more air. So there's only so much power available for any given load, and giving more fuel just burns it up... quite inefficiently (making for wasted fuel and excess heat). Give it a shot and see how the exhaust looks. If it's still black under low load/ little throttle then there is indeed a problem. But, most likely the problem is the driver. HTH, bb |
