I have an 80 eagle with a 6v92ta. The exhaust comes out under the bumper just left of center. When I went on a trip recently, my taillight harness melted because of hot exhaust. What do you do with the exhaust? Also does anyone know how I can charge batteries with alternator when I'm driving. My house batteries are gel-cel and I was told not to charge them any more then 13.2 volts. Thankyou, Tom |

From old trucking days, I prefer to always be able to see the exhaust in the rear view. Used to be that you could control things by controlling the black smoke. Even though modern fuels and engines make smoking nearly impossible, I still want to see what is coming out for self satisfaction. The 4905 had it coming out the drivers side, I loved that, my current diesel comes out the pass side, harder to notice, might change that. |

Move the taillight harness. |

Gus. Gus. Gus. We DO NOT give sensible answers here without exploring all the most highly complex options first. Consider running the exhaust to pipe the front, then over the roof to the rear. Or, using refrigeration powered by the heat of the exhaust itself, to keep the pipe cool, using coils of plutonium.... Let's use some imagination here. |

Or you could insulate the Harness? That would be a simple solution. |

Jim Shepherd sells some exhaust insulation that should solve the problem. |

John, Sorry, I was in a hurry and lost my head. In retrospect, I agree that coils of plutonium with solar cells providing power would be better. Or windmills, does nobody here favor windmills as much as I? Mike Jackson, The problem with harness insulation is that it is a perfect collector of grease. |

On the charging thing... This is going to sound a lil' Rube Goldbergish, but you can use an inverter to power a charger designed for gel cells... Then, while at a power pole with 110v hookup, the charger will still be of use, keeping things working and charged as you camp. |

We had a Thomas schoolbus with a rear engine CAT that would melt the radiator overflow jug over the exhaust pipe. I found some exhaust pipe insulation cloth at the local Auto Zone, wrapped it on and held it with SS hose clamps. Works great. |
