I was making up a cord to match my Toyoto P/U and my Prevost. I had to change stuff due to the fact I towed it with my 04.Any way. I think I screwed up something in the Toyoto wireing. The tach, spedo and heat gauge quit working.Does any one know if I burnt up some computer type stuff or what?

Is your prevost 24 volt and have 24 volt tail lights?

You may have fried your ecm computer on the truck...

Your 04 was probably 12 volt.

Hi Dave
No I got all the stuff to change the 24 volt lights over to 12 volt. John MC9 asks "does it smell like bacon" What has that got to do with it?

You may think that I am being silly, But more curious...
How did you convert from the 24 volts on the bus to the 12 volts for the trailer/toad/towing harness?

Relays? or some 3 to 2 way converter directly?
Did you have 2-way diode packs installed on the toad light circuits between the wiring harness and the lights?

If you toad is a late model most of them use the ECM computer to control lights,a/c and many systems. The ECM computer can be damaged or destroyed by current backfeeding into them.

I know this because I wiped out a buick ecm while testing an a/c compressor clutch manually with a jumper wire to the battery. Cost me $800 to get the a/c and part of the dashboard working again.

Just asking??:-)

Although I meant that in jest (since you provided nearly no
information for the question asked), the "bacon smell" may
be the epoxy inside the ecm burning.

David's got it right.

You followed up, saying:
"I got all the stuff to change the 24 volt lights over to 12 volt"

With a voltmeter, I would test the harness from the bus and
find out exactly what voltage is being sent to the towed vehicle.

But, even with 12v to 12v hookups, on some of today's vehicles
there can be major headaches, even with the diode setups.
The easiest way to wire a towed vehicle, and the way to insure
against any headaches, is to use a harness and add bulbs to the
rear light assembly of the towed.
BX8869 Bulb and Socket Tail Light Wiring Kit
That won't do you much good now, though.

If you had 12v going to the towed Vehikle, then, I would undo
everything I've changed with the towed vehicle's wiring and see
if it restores everything. If not, I'd check all fuses... Then, after
weeping profusely, I'd dry my eyes and drive it to a dealer that
can test it on their equipment. ECMs can be expensive, but
usually they fail totally, not just with an item here and there... or
at least with my experiences.. maybe the new ones are better?
Sounds like the "stuff" you changed may lead you to finding the
cure. Undo it, man. Put it all back the way it was first, then look
for the problem with that end of things.

It'll give you something to do, whilst waiting for the fat guy
in the red suit. (Maybe he'll bring you a fire extinguisher!)

Cheer up, it's likely something simple. (at least that's my
"holiday" wish for you!)

John, I think you left out one important piece if advice. "If you do not really know what you are doing, don't screw with it".

Richard-

The world would have never gone beyond the stone age,
had that been a good attitude to have. How else to learn; to
improve anything, without some experimentation? So what
if there's some damage? There is little that can't be fixed, and
through the procedure, an education is earned.

One of my shop teachers in high school had a sign on the wall behind his desk that said, "The man who never made a mistake never made anything."

As a business owner and manager over the years that concept has served me well and probably been a source of comfort to a number of my employees.

With all the inquiries about wiring towed's - Why don't one of you entrepeneurs design a universal light bar that incorporates:

1) individual harnesses for both 12 and 24 volt wired to independent lighting systems

2) magnetic mounts and strap mounts so it is easily adapted to any situation

3) incorporate a flourescent "vehicle in tow" sign on the bar

4) have I@n sell them on this web site on a commission basis

Portable, Universal, Simple, Safe, and relatively Inexpensive ..... Hmmmmmm

When I wired my Jeep Liberty, I installed the kit that provides bulb sockets that you simply drill into the rear light assemblies. No Diodes or anything to screw with. You could then use 24 volt bulbs if you needed.

Lots of good advice.
I got the 24v to 12v set up from Jim Wright Wrico). Every thing worked fine I was happy as a clam untill I got in my p/u to go home and found most of the gauges don't work any more including the a/c.
It's a 99 Toyoto 6 cyl stick shift, I also have a 85 with over 200,000 miles on it. Toyotos seem to go for ever. I towed the 99 behind my 04. When I wired it I had to put in the black box to go from a 2 wire system to a 3 wire.
I had a couple of my bus friends tell me to just add 24v bulbs. It sounded to simple.

Yeah. Sounds like David might have had it right, right off the bat.
Check the voltage at the bus end first, to make sure. If you had
24v going into that 12v vehicle, it's likely $$$ time. If you replace
it today, the parts guy can get his kid that house in Bermuda for
Christma....oooops.... "the Holiday".

24 volt bulbs on a separate wiring system for towing are a great ideal. It is pretty easy to drill a hole in the plastic taillight housing and install a separate bulbs for the toad lighting circuit that are not connected to the car wiring in any way, except for the common ground.

It was an obsure fuse that was blowen.
If I do another 24v to l2v it will be by drilling holes in the recepticles and put in 24v bulbs.
Thanks for all the help.
