A fellow bus nut pal of mine called with what he thinks is a transmission problem. He is in Yuma and has an MCI 9 with Allison automatic. When slowing down to come off an exit ramp on the highway there is a loud thunking sound from the rear and a jerk, like a hard downshift. On acceleration and at cruising speed no problems at all, but as soon as he lets off the throttle and starts to slow down the same loud thunking sound. Someone sugested torque converter. Any ideas where to start? Also, anyone know a good bus garage in the Yuma area?

RJ is right the first thing I would check is the U joints also. I am in Yuma and had a computer problem on my 102a3. I went to diesel automotive services. They are located on Burr St which is off E 13th street.Phone #928 783 8917 . Very good Mech.

Is it just a "hard downshift"? Some Allisons can be brutal.
Have her keep it in first and accelerate, and lets off the
accelerator, does it clunk? Doing that will eliminate the
up/down shifting and give you a better indication of where
it's really coming from.

I'm sure that since it's been a month since original post its been found and fixed by now, and I agree it's most likely to be U-joint. But also lets keep in mind could be rear end trouble! I've seen far more U-joint and rear end problems than trans when thunking and jerking are mentioned! Again just my 2 cents worth(at a bargin of no charge), but hey what would I know? I'm in TN and he's in AZ it could be a geographic issue! (LOL- just joking) Bryce Gaston aka;Busted Knuckle
