I was all set to make the oh so typical dining booth but now I'm having second thoughts. What are the pros and cons of booths and table and chair eating spaces.
Thanks

Table and chairs allow for easier entrance and exit for each
individual seated. You can use the chairs outside as well, with
a folding table. A stain or tear is easier to repair (or replace)
on a chair seat. The interior appears roomier, with the chairs
tucked under the table.

The only sacrifice, is the room usually available under the seats
of the conventional booth seats.

I second what John says. We opted for the booth for 1.) storage 2.)another bed.

Choose what you like best.

Jerry, besides the extra storage it can also be made to be used as a bed for unexpected guests(we have grown kids and a few grandkids) so just in case we decieded to go with the booth I allways figure if it is there we will never need it but if it is not we will need it all of the time,Mike

We opted for a free standing table with two chairs and we also have a bar with two matching bar stools! It seats 2 or 4 comfortably but there only the two of us so it works out fine! It really all depends on YOUR family size and lifestyle!

I prefer a table and chairs, but sleeping arrangements for the grandchildren neccesitate a booth.

Since I travel alone a booth works equally as well.

I am going to do both. Facing forward will be a booth seat then we will have a table and one or two chairs. I have built both. This time I am giving up 1/2 my storage space for a more open feel to the area.
I think it will look good too.

I have had 2 5th wheels with a table and 4 chairs and an airstream with a booth. I am in the process of building a booth and taking the table out of a 2005 montana 5th wheel. Not counting the added storage and the extra bed the booth is more comfortable. You have to pull the outside chairs away from the table for people to get into the inside chairs, and in our case the table is between an outside wall and the couch which doesn't leave much room to move chairs back. With a booth you can slide in and put your feet up. Its a mater of choice and how many people that you are seating. With just two of us, a booth is more comfortable and practical.

A booth is practical for us because it gives extra storage plus a comfortable extra bed. With grandchildren, adult children and others sometimes travelling with us, this is a real plus. The other plus is that the seating is firmly fastened and doesn't need to be secured for travel or taken out for stops along the way.

Real chairs are usually more comfortable than sitting in a booth with a slab of wood and a chunk of foam under.

I did post a building sketch for solid booth seats with 4 or 5 angles that help somewhat.

Not a problem for just mealtime but OUCH those rainy days.

Our way, is a raising and lowering ,expanding Grand Banks teak , removable table , and high grade coach pax seats.

The seats work for endless hours for passengers , and the tilting backrest is well engineered , and free!

We designed our bus for "Cocktails for 6, Dinner for 4, and Sleeps 2". However, since our grandchildren occasionally go with us, we did install a booth for the extra bed when needed. And the extra storage is handy. YMMV, Jack

Jerry,

Good suggestions above.

I am also contemplating what I want to do.

I saw an elongated booth(rectangular) where two sat against the wall and one on each end that I am looking at as it does not encroach into the aisle as much.

After I saw Ace & Susans bus at Bussin 2006 I am positive that I want a kitchen with a bar end.(FYI-His pictures look good, but do no justice to the quality of work) and that means I need a table or booth that doesn't take as much aisle space.

Decisions, comprimises, the joys of the designer.

Good luck

I made a table that seats two using folding wooden chairs, I designed it so I can add a leaf and two more chairs and seat four adults. When traveling I fold up the chairs and use the floor space to put two small dog crates and a parrot cage. I couldn't do that with a booth!

I want storage: booth here. Seat padding is hi-density closed-cell foam, like a hiker's sleeping pad. It can, theoretically, fold into a bad, but I doubt it will be used as such often.

Booth style, with a potty under one and a tub under the other!
Also saves time when you're in a hurry and have to eat, get
washed, use the facilities. Now do all at the same time!

Mine bus has a table and chairs, but I am removing them for sleeping room for my kids. My son looks like he is going to be tall and will be growing off the couch (longest flexsteel made) soon (and he is only in jr. high!).

I also worried about the chairs flying about in a collision. With my bus layout, even a minor collision could sent them flying forward into the salon where my family rides.

I am working on a yacht style booth design so that it will be long enough for him to sleep on and it will also not have to be so wide into the isle space.

O K, I'll chime in. I built a two person booth along the driver's side wall after toting a table and two swivel chairs around for a couple of years. I didn't want the table to take up hall space when not being used, so I mounted one end on a drawer slider that allows the table to be extended 8" into the hall when dining, and retracted back flush (see pic of table leg next to seat cushion) when not eating. Mirrors and windows allow us good visability while eating. If you are interrested, pix are in photo section of the yahoo-mci group under Steve and Lynn's 7. CaSteve

i've been toying with this quite a bit.
having had numerous old crappy stick n staple rv trailers for years, (hauling stuff to and from events and giving me a place to sleep) you can get a lot of ideas from a 20 ft trailer that will fit really well in a 40 ft coach :-)

generally, i don't mind a booth with a drop down table so it turns into a bed, but in a trailer these are usually in the front and take up the whole width of the trailer. my scenicruiser has a center dropped aisle that prevents this.

my holliday rambler has a side booth that is basically half of an octagon (think stop sign shaped) ... and i don't think i've ever sat in it. it seems to be a repository for stuff i need to set down.

for my bus, i'm going to do 4 swivel captains chairs like this guy did:

http://www.warbusaur.com/cruisers/pd4501-0821/0821_12.jpg
http://www.warbusaur.com/cruisers/pd4501-0821/0821_2.jpg
notice in this picture:
http://www.warbusaur.com/cruisers/pd4501-0821/0821_7.jpg
that the tables are useable from fore and aft, while the chairs can still swivel.

this thing:
http://www.braunston.com/boatdes/javades.html
is pretty handy.
(narrowboats are not much wider, if any, than a bus)

i guess from my perspective there's no point in reinventing the wheel.
most of these problems were solved in the maritime industry a long long time ago.

Jerry, I have built and installed a L-shaped dinette. It is 72" oa length. It is similiar to the style Marathon builds. It sits 4 adults comfortably, with pull out drawers below. We are in the process of looking for a table leg system that allows us to move the table top fore and aft, this will allow the adult seating arrangement more comfortable. Maybe someone in the community can suggest several mfgs for table leg system. It works for me. Mark

Just look in any marine catalog ,

you will find SEAT pedistals that raise and lower ,
AND have the ability to be slid back & forth about 10 inches.

The table can also rotate when unlocked , which can also be usefull.

About $100 will buy a really superb adjustable base unit and seat slide.

Hope not too many folks decide to dance on the table , but there that strong!

Works for me,

FAST FRED
