Locate them in the bays between the axles. Such is required under the NTSB/MVSA IIRC.

Remember that they must be secured by a fastening sufficient to withstand an 8 G load.

i.e. 40# tank requires a 320# restraint.

Marc,

I've read that comment on the boards before, but cannot substantiate anywhere in NFPA 1192 that tanks located aft the rear axle are disallowed. I've only read in the official regs that no tanks are allowed forward the steering axle.

Did I not read hard enough? Someone quote me the reg. number for the aft rear axle prohibition, and I'll happilly look it up and post it.

I think my authority for this is posts on the BB and the Bus Converter's Bible, but I'm speaking from memory.

Between the axles sounds logical to me, btw.

Passenger side real compartment is an ideal location for a genset.
Depending on what you plan on using propane for, two 20 pound tanks sounds very small.

Don't forget Article 5.2.5 about heat shielding near an engine.

As a general rule, it is not a good idea to have an LP tank anywhere near something that could spark. They should be in a compartment sealed from the inside of the coach (including the rest of the bay) and ventilated to the outside per Article 5.2.6.

The eight times the containers full weight is in Article 5.2.4.1.

Don't guess, don't make costly and dangerous mistakes, get your own copy of the code and study it so that you know what is approved, safe, and proven to work.
The code is available from either the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) or the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

RVIA
Www.rvia.org then to Industry Documents then search on 1192 to
http://rvia.hbp.com/itemdisplay.cfm?pid=42

NFPA
http://www.nfpa.org then search on "1192" then click 2005 edition to
http://www.nfpa.org/catalog/product.asp?category%5Fname=&pid=119205&target%5Fpid=119205&sr c%5Fpid=&link%5Ftype=search

George, IIRC that 'should' should be 'must'!

I'm willing to be wrong, but don't think in this case I am. :-)
