Hello out there, people are talking about a engine fast idle. Am I missing something, do all 8-71's have a fast idle hooked up. Does one have to be installed or where is it located. I really haven't found a fast idle on my 75 4905, could anyone help? Thank you all for so much help. Larry d 4905

In the Eagle I drove, I had a stick cut to the length that provided
for the correct amount of acceleration, to give the proper amount
of charging, to provide the power needed to for the systems
to be powered.

An old bus, is an old bus!

I am not sure if they all had one or not, but it is common on buses. It is also not unusual for them to be disabled by a Jake Brake installation at some point in the life of the bus because of the expense of the part to allow both a jake and the fast idle.

I test drove a 1980 4905 and it had a fast idle. The switch was to the rear of the panel to the left of the driver (next to the Jake enable switch).

Check on your governor for an Air Cyl. like the one in the pic. If there's just one there, that's the stop cyl. If the fast idle one is there, it's very likely you can get it back in service.

If you are considering a cruise control installation, the King Cruise has a fast idle built in. It works great as well as the cruise control itself.

Sorry about that. Got interrupted and did not realize I had already posted. Generally I catch these goof ups but this time I did not and it is now too late to edit the post. Oh well.

Our coach has a small brass chain attachted to the right of the throttle pedal and it hooks onto a "v" catch on the pedal. You grab the chain and pull it up, push down on the pedal with yer foot and hook the chain.

My "old fashion" 4104 with the ancient 671 has a hand throttle that gives just the right amount of fast idle when pulled out to the first stop.

I also use it as a cruise control on the open road where it has to be turned to unlock and pulled out enough for cruising.

Thank you all I thot I had missed something in the 4905, am investigating a cruise when I get time. I am sure I can get by with a stick or chain which are both very good ideas untill Santa flyes in next year with the cruise. thanks Larry d

As I recall in my 4905 manual, the fast idle was ONLY to be used on the Air Conditioned models, for running the AC when stopped. In fact, if you leave the switch on fast idle, the air throttle will not even work until you release the fast idle. Use of the fast idle as a "warmup" was discouraged.
