Where is your air dryer location on your 4905? With the 165 gal fuel tank, there is no room on mine at the end of the tank like the 145 gal units. |

I put mine back where the poop tank would have normally been, nice place there, close to the compressor. (Right Rear Corner) |

Hello Air dryer placement has some science to it. Don, you may want to check the minimum length of pipe recommended for that model of air dryer, between the compressor and the dryer. Reason is heat disipation. If the dryer is fed air that is too hot, primarily, it will destroy the effectiveness of the desicant, and secondly, be heating the plastic and rubber parts higher than intended for long reliable life. The dryer should be located somewhere that there is air circulation, so that it may shed the heat that it does get fed. Off the top of my head, the incoming air needs to be cooler than 150 degrees farenheit, but check to be sure. It leaves the compressor considerably hotter than that! happy coaching! buswarrior |

I canot recall the specs now, but it matched the distance location of the one on my Kenworth, worked well on it. Agreed, the distance is important, but as I recall, TOO much distance was bad also. |

Bendix's website has specs for all of their current (and past) air dryers. www.bendix.com. ...JJ |

Maybe I should ask...Does anyone have a 4905 with a 165 gallon fuel tank and a GM FACTORY installed airdryer option. Where did they locate it? |

My 1976 just had a "spitter valve", installed just behind the battery bay. I am not aware of factory dryers on 4905's |

Adding to Buswarrior's post, if the idea is to remove water, the hotter the air, the more moisture it will hold due to the value for partial pressure of water at that temp. So, the cooler you get the air, the more moisture will drop out. I've run dessicant dryers at temps above 150 deg.F while drying Polycarbonate or ABS resins. I'm wondering if the 150 deg limit imposed by Bendix is due to the size of the unit being unable to pull out the water if the entry temp is above 150 deg? |

Probably. You notice they want it out of the engine compartment, and in an area exposed to free flowing air while moving. On a 4905 the old poop tank area meets the requirements, except it would be nice to be closer to the first air tank. No free flowing air up there though. |

On 4905's with the 145 gal tank, the air dryer is installed in the space where the shorterfuel tank ends ( driver's side ), if it was factory installed on an SEO option. If you look on your 4905, the main air line has a connection there that is separated for the air dryer installation if the origional owner spec'ed it when ordered. My one 4905 with the shorter tank has one mounted there. My 4905 with the optional tank has the same line connector but no space for the dryer. Maybe it was an either-or. I was hoping that someone had the long tank option with what appeared to be a factory dryer installed in what? location.I know what Bendix recommends and can do that; just wanted to find out what GM did. |
