I moved from Oregon to Kentucky a little over a year ago. Well my Oregon tags on the bus expire this month so with great trepidation I finally transfered the title and registration to Kentucky. I'd gotten the required VIN inspection back in December so all I needed was to visit the county clerk, with the inspection report, Oregon title, and proof of insurance, and pay. Since I'd lived in Oregon I hadn't paid sales tax on the bus, which I'd actually bought in California almost exactly two years ago. Kentucky insists on collecting sales tax in this situation. You can get an afidavit (notarized on a Ky. form) from the seller stating the price paid or accept their value. I had called the tax people and described the bus, a 1968 PD4107 they said I'd have to pay sales tax on $3650. I told the clerk that but she insisted on calling herself. I was shocked when she said $750, thinking that was the sales tax meaning they valued it at $12,500 so I asked 'how come so much?' Her response was you don't think it's worth $750? I quickly shut up and gladly paid the sales tax on $750, a whoping $45.
