OK, unpacked my brand new Equator CD400 compact dishwasher which will eventually be installed permanently under the propane oven in my bus. I decided I'm going to use it in my apartment for the time being, and as it came with everything needed to connect it to the kitchen sink, I figured, "Why not?" So, I unpack the unit, set it up on the counter beside the sink, and connect everything according to the instructions. The controls on the unit are as follows: starting from the top, a rectangular button that is flush with the front surface of the control panel. This is the button that opens the door, much like most microwave ovens. Below that are a pair of LED lamps, the green one is supposed to be lit when the unit is turned on, and the orange one lights to indicate high heat has been selected. Below the LEDs is a round button, just under an inch in diameter, which protrudes from the panel and is labled "power on/off" with an illustration of the button in both the on and off positions, supposedly so you'd know which is which. Below that is an identical button labeled "High heat/Normal heat" and again the same illustrations as the power button. Below both of those is the timer which goes round and round as the cycles progress. I selected the normal wash cycle, normal heat, pressed the power button and nothing happenned. No green light, no pump sounds, nothing. Wondering if there's a problem with the GFI outlet it's plugged into, I try to power it from another outlet. Still nothing. I try tripping and resetting the GFI, still nothing. I get out my meter and verify that there is indeed a nominal 117 volts RMS at the plug. I run the timer through a couple of revolutions, still nothing. This has me just a bit worried, as I bought this unit on eBay deeply discounted from retail as a closeout. Reread the instructions, making certain I didn't miss anything. While thinking of what else to do, I pressed the heat selector button, and the thing ROARS to life! EITHER THE FACTORY MISLABLED THE PANEL OR WHOEVER ASSEMBLED THIS UNIT PUT THE SWITCHES IN REVERSED! So, now I wonder - should I bother to take the thing apart and correct the problem? Or should I just leave it as is as a sort of "secret code" to mess with the head of whoever may end up using it in the future? It does work great, and is much quieter than I thought it would be. It should be even quieter once it is mounted in a cabinet. When set to high heat, it heats the water to 180F. When the rinse cycle completes, just open the door, pull out the dish rack and in five minutes the dishes are dry and ready to be put away. With its white exterior and stainless steel interior, it matches the oven that's going to be installed over it quite nicely. Now all I need is a white gas 2 burner cooktop and fridge to complete my kitchen appliance list. |

I bought a dehumidifier for my bus on eBay that supposedly was a repaired return and the fan only worked in one position. I took it apart and figured out that the fan wires had been hooked up wrong, after correctly the wiring the unit works perfectly. That's one way we find such great deals on eBay-- people are buying factory seconds and selling them. In my case it worked out, hope yours is a simple fix also. --Geoff '82 RTS AZ |

Phil, Great story. I have bought a lot of stuff off ebay that just needed a little attention. I recently purchased a new takeout 12 gallon electric/propane unit for $200, that sells for $550 new, 1 hour labor and $20 in parts equals my efforts were worth $230. I vote for fix it! Cliff |
