Has anybody here removed the mitre box from their Eagle? I want to keep the belt driven rad fan. Per what i've read on this bbs, I've decided moving to an electric fan system is out of the question. My thought behind removing the mitre box is: The only thing it's driving is the rad fan. That seems a little overkill for a fan. I've moved to a smaller alternator that runs off the old aux a/c pulley on my 8v71.

Opinions anyone???

Thanks - Matt

I understand that cooling requirements require up to 35 HP to move the air necessary to cool the engine. That in mind, is the mitre box still overkill?

True, but if you take into consideration how much the mitre box is made to drive (300 Amp Alternator, Bus A/C compressor, rad fan, condenser fan) it still seems a little overkill to me (thats just me though). Seems like I remember reading somewhere that someone used something in place of the mitre box just for driving the fan. (how vague is that??)

Plus, I've already had to replace the mitre box on this bus once (A/C comp siezed up and cracked the mitre box before the u-joint on the drive shaft broke) and that's definately not something I want to have to do again.

Matt -

FYI, the classic Scenicruisers used belts to drive the fans for both the radiator and the a/c condensor, no mitre box. See if you can find a Scenic owner in your area and go have a look.

Might also look at a Prevost, VanHool or Setra, too. Similar set-ups.

Gillig Phantom transit buses use a hydraulically driven fan, another possibility, especially if the coach has a 6v92 in it - then the system would be sized appropriately for you. (That is, if you have an 8V71 or 6V92. Too small for an 8V92.)

RJ: I think the scenicruiser had the fan mounted on a miter box. With a side rad, you have to make a ninety somewhere, however I was going to suggest that method but you beat me to it.

It's been 4 or 5 yrs since I have even had the engine compartment open on an Eagle so I don't quite remember how the set up is configured, but I see the Setra set up almost daily. I think the main difference is the Eagle radiator is side mounted and the Setra is angle mounted(about 45*). The belts and fan set up on the Setra make no turns, the fan has an angled shroud. I don't know if this is any help or not, but if theres anything you need to know about the set up I'd be glad to help!

I have installed a right angle drive for my fan, seems to be working fine. one can also control the fan speed by the pully size

Bob, I'd like to know more about your setup. What parts you used - where I could look for them - etc. I'd actually like to speed the fan up a little bit - especially during the summer. Also, what would you estimate it will cost me to set my system up that way?

Thanks!!!
