I'm looking for a way to ship a generator (about 260 lbs). I'm looking at having one shipped from FL to NC. What have you guys done for economical shipping? I've had quotes from $190 (with about $150 insured value) to $400 (with $1000 insured value) from FedEx. I'm sure there are better ways to ship this. Does anybody have any suggestions of shippers they've used in the past? Thanks for any ideas!

Try Gator Freight...used them many times. Dependable and on time...but remember fuel prices have skyrocketed so there won't be many bargains out there.

UPS has a way to farm out the shipping, but you go through them.

Try checking on having it shipped by bus...I've heard they are reasonable.

Try uship.com

The first part of April, I will be making 2 round trips to Vero Beach, Fl from Colmbia, Md with household stuff going down and empty returning to Md. I am going to try to hook up with uship for return loads.

Greyhound did this sort of thing at one time....don't know if they still do it...very competitive, better than most back when... :-)

Find out what LTL carriers serve your area and call them for quotes. Call several times...they will quote all over the board. Some online quotes are less expensive. Yellow Freight shipped my Yamaha (about the size of your Onan) from Atlanta for $125. I would think you should be able to get it shipped for less than $150 even with todays fuel surchage. Is it on a pallet? The trucking companies will damage the genset if it's not palletized so that their forks will easily go under it.
Another issue is how will you unload it? It's much cheaper to have the generator sent to the terminal and you pick it up. They'll load it for you. Shipping to a res is expensive. Be cheaper yet if Jack delivers the unit to the carrier.
As someone stated, UShip will often find someone that will deliver items very inexpensively. Not always though. I bought an engine dolly from Madbrit in Arizona, and the best UShip could offer was about $300. I got it shipped via LTL common carrier for $190.
You could almost drive down and haul it yourself in a little Jap pickup for the freight costs. Nice area to visit. Easy days drive (one way) from your location...well, except for that I-95 section.
Good Luck! JR
