What price should I expect to pay for a mid to late 80s 102A3 or 96A3 with a 6V92? Craig froom Gumpydog thinks I should be able to find a 102A3 with 6V92 for $15,000 to $16,000. Craig did give me some leads on a few local buses and I need to call them. After a lot of looking at various web sites and such, I've found only one 102A3 with 6V92 in that price range. Most are are in the low to mid $20k range with a number in the 30s and a few even in the 40s. I found several 102A3s and 96A3s with 8V92s for similiar prices to 6V92s. I did go to ABC Companies here in Minnesota, but the prices seemed high and the salesman wasn't at all helpful. Some of the 102A3s had completely rusted out signboards. I assume used bus prices are negotiable just as any used vehicle is. How much can I expect the prices to come down? I expect that big bus dealers aren't going to deal too much with a guy who wants one bus for an RV as they would with the charter operator buying buses all the time. Brian Elfert |

One thing to consider when you're looking at a bus is how many miles on the engine. an in-frame is $6-8k, and out out-of-frame $12-14k. So buying a bus that has 150k miles on the engine for $4k more is probably a better deal than a bus that has 600k on an engine but is 4k less. Conventional wisdom seems to be that the 6v92 gets around 300k miles between overhauls. someone is gonna say they got a million miles i'm sure, but I use 300k-current miles as a measure of how much relatively trouble-free use I can expect. DD reliabuilt rebuilt 6v92s can run 19k but come with a good warranty and good nationwide support. So if you find a bus with a reliabilt under warranty it might be a better deal. |

On that basis, it might make sense to look for a good running bus that has 450k miles on it, particularly if you canv verify the service history. It may have only 150k or so miles on a rebuild. DaveD |

Yes, I'm trying to find a bus with a recently rebuilt 6V92 or 8V92. It makes sense to pay a little more for a rebuilt engine. The problem is that some bus companies call an engine rebuilt if only a small repair was done and not a full rebuild. The sales guy at Colonial in Chicago was honest and said that some of 6V92s in their 102A3s for sale were probably not really rebuilt even though the service records say the engine was rebuilt. The service guys had been writing that they rebuilt the engine when they only did a small repair and not a rebuild. Brian Elfert |
