I just wanted to drop this note in for folks. I did a rate quote with Geico (my current insurance company) for adding a GMC RTS to my policy. They're only offering me liability insurance. The reason is in the text of the email below.

My current 6 month rate is $1,436.50. Needless to say, if there's an accident, I'm well covered.

Adding an '82 RTS would bring my 6 month rate to $2,138.30. That's $116.96 per month.

When I finally hit the road, I'll be selling one of my cars, which is about $700 per 6 months. Once again, changing lifestyles from the brick and morter house to an RV will save me a fortune.

The rate is probably in part due to my driving history. I got a stupid ticket for running a red light about a year ago. I stopped, looked, and made a right on red, as allowed by law. I didn't see the small "No turn on red" sign on the other side of the intersection, but it was the middle of the night, and there was no traffic so it really didn't matter. I also have two no-fault accidents, one being when one of my cars was stolen and $10k worth of damage was done to it. If your driving history is better than mine, you're more likely to get a better rate. In a couple years, one accident will drop off. In 4 more years the second accident will drop off, and in 6 years the stupid ticket will drop off.

I did note in the comments that this is (will be) a RV conversion bus. I estimated $20k in improvements and a $5k purchase price, which is what I'm aiming for when I get one.

The vehicle will be registered in Florida, in a good neighborhood's zip code. Zip codes really do make a difference towards your insurance rates.

Dear [my real name]:

Thank you for your Internet request.

Based on the information that you have provided, if you were to add the 1982 GMC RTS II, your new six-month premium would be approximately $2,138.30. Please keep in mind that this is an estimate only, and the actual premium may differ based on the Vehicle Identification Number for the 1982 GMC.

Since this request was for a quote only, no changes have been made to your policy.

Due to the age of the motorhome and the cost of the customizations we would only be able to provide liability insurance coverage.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

To ensure a timely response when replying to this message, please do not remove your policy number from the subject field or alter the reply-to address.

[snip blatent Geico advertisment]

We appreciate your business and look forward to serving your insurance needs for years to come.

Sincerely,

[Rep's name]

You might check some other companies; that sounds high. My MC-8 added about $91 for 6 months (not per month) for liability, collision, comprehensive, UIM, UM, etc. I do have a clean record and use USAA, which is very cheap. I insured it as an MCI RV and took the seats out within 2 days of having it delivered. I had the title changed to 'house car' (NC's RV classification) soon after. I'd try Progressive; they have been good to a lot of friends and insure my boat economically.

That Gecko can really make you squeal, can't he?

I use Progressive. They don't get quite so... personal.....intimate...

I had Progressive. I really liked their policy of having a car out on the scene of an accident ASAP, and cutting checks on the spot.

Ok, story time. I was in Tampa, Florida, driving in after work traffic on Nebraska Ave. I was about 3 car lengths behind a slightly lifted Ford Ranger. All of a sudden, I saw smoke coming from his tires. The bastard didn't have any brake lights. I braked hard and swerved for the cement island in the middle of the road. He was braking hard, because he was about to hit the truck in front of him, which happened anyways. The truck he hit ran. I got half way out of the lane, and BANG. You can see the imprint of his bumper in the hood of that car.

It was a '91 Firebird (not TransAm), worth about $3,500 at the time. They estimated $4,500 worth of damage to my car, and $300 damage to his truck. They gave him a check, he signed a waiver, and he was done. My car got towed back to my house. The busted radiator wasn't going to let me go anywhere on my own. They called a couple days later to tell me the estimates. They paid off the finance company, and sent me a check for the difference. They had another tow truck come take it off to the bone yard.

I switched to Geico, when they cut my rates substantially AND gave me much better coverage.

BTW, if anyone is in the market for a nice '98 TransAm with low milage (275hp 350, automatic, very pretty), it's available for $9k (negotiable). It's my spare car, and only gets driven when I blow belts off the '00 TransAm. :-) I think asking a friend to drive me to the parts store is a lot cheaper than keeping it sitting in the driveway. After sitting for almost two years, I had to take it on the freeway to blow the dust out of the exhaust. It was really funny, it honestly had dust in the exhaust. I'm in LA right now, and you get dust on everything. I didn't think it could get INSIDE the exhaust. :-)

Firebirds are funny, they need to be driven. For a while, I lived 1/2 mile from work. I only drove it to work to bring stuff too heavy to carry for the 1/2 mile, or to the grocery store (also 1/2 mile away). The '00 started running really rough, and I couldn't figure out why. I took it on a road trip, and drove it hard. It suddenly perked up, like it was saying "Thanks daddy, I needed that!"

Mine is $180 a year in Florida. Liability & PIP...

It is registered and titled as a Motorhome/Private Coach. I won't say which company though.

My Isuzu (play truck) however is $1,400 a year with progressive commercial. Something about weight class and dual rear tires.

My 2002 Buick is $1,400 a year for full coverage and my 96 Van is $1,200 a year for basic stacked.
all because my work is over 30 miles away even though I work from home, I get raped by Travelers (formerly First Floridian).

The worst part is that if I change companies I get re-rated based on credit reports and the fact that I have moved a couple of times over the past 15 years and I pay double or triple the current rates. Understand that I have no hits, dings, tickets or any bad marks on my records for over 30 years.

I sure miss just living in the bus and having one car. Camping on someone else's property using their electric & water.

This going back to owning real-estate and having to pay property taxes, homeowners insurance, property repairs and all that stuff is a royal pain. I am trying to figure out how to get rid of everything again and go back to living in the bus. But I suspect that I will die first and I dread the thought of leaving this mess to my wife to clean up.

Ok, here's an update on the original message.

I went to get the Geico insurance. When I ran it, they came back to me saying that it can't be insured. I sent a strongly worded email back, basically saying that they had put me in a crappy position by quoting it, and then telling me no at the last minute.

I was accepted by Progressive, and got all the regular stuff (collision, liability, property damage, roadside assistance, personal property, etc)

It's like $1,200/yr. Again, that's my driving record, etc, etc, etc.. I forgot about the credit part of it. My credit score sucks. Not just sucks. I've seen bankrupt people with a better score than mine, and I've paid off everyone that thinks I owe them. That sucked, because some of them were absolute BS. One was an old apartment that had given me my deposit back after I left. They then put a few hundred dollar claim on my credit. Two years later, it showed up. I argued it for years, but eventually paid to get it to go away. I paid off my credit cards. I have two car loans I'm still paying on, but will sell one as soon as a buyer is willing to save a couple grand on a nice car.

I'm not a big fan of the credit system. Once my cars are paid off, I'm going to be a happy cash-only paying individual, and try to keep enough savings laying around to buy expensive items (like cars) as the need arise.
