Called a "Chinese six" by the English (pre PC days). This was an available truck chassis in those postwar days of shortage of material. Designed for weight distribution cab forward lorry. Doubling all the steering gear of course complicated things.

Same reason Land Rovers had aluminum bodies: shortage of steel, plenty of surplus aircraft to recycle.
