Hello everyone -

Don't get me wrong... I love our busses!!!!! We have worked on them side by side for several years. My concerns are as follows: my husband neglected to let you all know that he is SO frustrated with the @$#% thing breaking down and spending lots of money to fix it. That is when you finially locate the problem. He is always worried about a tow rig, because our bus spits out to much junk and he doesn't want to discolour his truck. Also... He works out of state and doesn't have the time that he used to. We drag boat race.. alot of prep time prior to a race. He has boat maintenance and bus maint. he has become really stressed about the whole situation. I am trying to figure out a way so that he will enjoy the racing season and relax again. I am not against busing!!!! We have a AM Gen that has new caps, skin, wiring and flooring. ALOT of money so far.. and the engine has not even been gone through. It has been sitting for 4 years. He got burnt out on that one and bought a RTS that was already done. Let me rephrase. Looked like it was done. I am just trying to look out for him. I would like a fifth wheel, but I will support him in his final decision.

how ya gonna pull the drag boat with the 5th wheel? I know it's a "drag" boat but you should use a trailer

In California, a Class A allows you to tandem a boat with a 5th wheel. IIRC, Geoff Smith may have done this (or mentioned it in a post)

I've seen the combination with both boats and sand rails

I know the feeling....

Working a 12hour job, 2 to 3 hour one way commute then try to find time to work on the RTSII. What a situation!

I wasn't in that job when the RTS came along, the HELL job came later.

I had a Mallard coach, it was such trouble and constantly falling apart. It was terrible to tow with. It got so bad I finally had to retire it. No one would buy it!

This is a hobby that takes lots of time, guts and money and a lot of companionship. I was doing it alone after all the help stopped showing up to assist. Man thats a long haul all by yourself. So many people tell you that you are nuts, you begin to believe it.

But, everyone has a dream, and wants that dream to come true. They will work their heart out to try to make that dream come true.

Is your RTS so unlivable that it cannot be used as the tow vehicle?

I too, had worried about the break downs and cost to repair, or where to repair if away from home.

This hobby is not for the faint of heart and takes up a majority of lifes time to complete. If Mama doesn't like the bus, then better get rid of it. It takes a team to work on the thing or it just won't work, take too long and will be the source of constant irritation.

Don't think you will be out of the water in a new 5'er! There is a site where they list the litgation against the manufacturers of 5'ers, Motorhomes, etc. There isn't a lot of quality going in them and they are plain falling apart.

I don't have the site but the link is inthe archive somewhere.

I'm sure you guys will work this out, its a tough decision either way you go.

good luck

I know how you feel i had to make the same decision. a month ago i traded by beloved BBQ trailer that i spent many evenings building and had many enjoyable competitions and catering with for a MCI. i have a orphan bus that i really like too so after the trade reality set in. i work allot and i really don't have the time to put in such a project, a Friend asked if i knew where he could find a bus, at first i said nothing , but i did call him a week later to look at mine and we made a deal. IF is comes down to it's aggravation to do something then the fun gets lost and the money not well spent. get something that you will enjoy. 2 buses 3 headachs lol

Pulling doubles... That's just plain lunacy!

I know people do it but all need their heads examined. Maybe it's legal in some places too.. But man-o-man is that an insurance claim looking for a lawyer...

Sorry, I just think that ONLY tow trucks should be allowed to pull doubles. Ok so truckers do it but there are many safety issues and they have some required safety equipment.

There are serious issues with double trailers. From what I understand, it's illegal in quite a few states, and I've only ever seen it done by truckers.

Myself, I'd hate to get into a situation where I had to even attempt to back it up. :-)

when you buy a conversion sight unseen from 1800 miles away, based only on the seller's information, you run a risk of being deceived... as i remember, there were several problems on the rts.... like the fuel rack stuck on 1 bank... stud piloted wheels on hub piloted drums...mismatched tires, radial and bias on the same axle.... the rear of the bus engine covering and bumper damaged prior to your picking it up....these all add up when you start counting your nickels and dimes.....

look to see if there other bus nuts in your area and see if they can help you in the necessary repairs and I'm sure you can help them, thats what goods friend can do for each other, have a bus party ounce a month and throw a BBQ. it takes the pressure off when things go south and get to discuss other options. I'm sure you folks have nice buses and yes it does get on your nerves like mine does, i don't feel the 5W is not the answer they break too. good luck and be patient.
