Over the last year my steering(sheppard-4106) has become increasing more loose. I had new tires put on yesterday and this gave me an opportunity to get in and around the front suspension. Found bearings & kingpins to be good. No apparent movement of any radius rods. Upon checking the amount of play in the in-put linkage I noticed that my steering box was moving! I found that ALL of the bolts that attach the steering unit to the mounting plate were loose & one had fallen out.A word to the wise: CHECK YOUR BOLTS. |

A second word to the wise - After checking - Properly Torque Your Bolts. I wouldn't mount a steering box with anything less than a Grade 8 bolt/washer combo. |

I would check everything to make sure holes have not become enlarged due to looseness and movement. No amount of torquing will correct this problem. Richard |

Darrell If you still have play in the steering there is no way to get it out of the Sheppard boxes. You have to replace them. Even rebuilt from Sheppard they allow about 2" of play in the wheel. I went to the factory in PA about 4 years ago to get a rebuilt one as no one except the mfg rebuilds them anymore. Bill |
