I bought a diaphram for my quick release valve. after removing mine I find it is a solid plastic non rebuildable unit. was this part superceded by a rebuildable unit? this is in my spare tire compartment and connected to my emergency brake control. and only leaks when brake is released.

Ron, I'm not sure on whether or not it was rebuild-able or not, but one thing I'd check is chauk the wheels good then release the brakes and go back and slide under in front of the drives a use a pair of vise grips to clamp off the hoses going to yer(drive axle) brake chambers one by one momentarily while someone else listens for the air leaking to see if it stops if it does then you've got a bad diaphragm in the chamber not the valve! More than once I have found this to be the problem instead of the valve being bad! I need to get some manuals on the 8's but the only 1 I ever work on has it's own manuals when it shows up for service! (which he just called today and wants to bring it by in the next week or 2 and have it checked over for the summer!)

Hello Ron.

Leaks from exhausts in a DD3 system may indeed be warnings of other things than the valve the air is leaking from.

I might be hesitant to apply vice grips to a hose that I had to pay to replace, but Bryce is indeed heading in a suitable direction.

So we can trouble shoot for you, can you describe a little more where and under what conditions is this valve that is leaking air with the parking brakes released?

DD3 are not pressurized when released, unlike a spring brake, so the valving, both local and remote, is suspect in this case. Leaking air after parking, or with the brake pedal applied more likely suggests a chamber diaphragm problem.

DD3 brake systems are just as straightforward as any other: air leaking from certain places under certain conditions point to specific problems, easily exposed with a bit of trouble shooting.

Let us know, Ron!

happy coaching!
