i'm checking out a coach and need your vast expertise. it is a 1967 mci mc5a, with unknown miles on an 8v71 with spicer 8844 manual trans. he says it has a new clutch assembly, it has pwr steering, 24v chassis, 120 v house ,12v for headlights , primus central heating and a trace 2500 inverter. i copied this from his add and have not talked to him yet . he is asking $18,999 us. for it . the photos i have seen look like it was a homemade conversion , although i'm not certain of it. the windows do not look skinned over . and the exterior looks a little dull. please let me know what you think of the price. also some opinions as to the components mentioned would be great. i know its not much to go on but i have faith in you all. thank you kindly.

good motor and mechanicals incld the primus, not a bad starting price, most people leave a little dicker room. Not a bad 35' model if its in good shape.Look for salt/rust damage etc.

FWIW, I paid $10k for my 35' 1962 GMC4106 conversion last year. 8v71, 4 spd., 6.5kW Gas Onan (ohNo!), 2 roof airs, queen bed, dinette, tub/shower (uh huh), 3-way fridge, two furnaces, etc. Paint was pretty bad, but alum. in good shape, some rust underneath.

I may have paid a little less than what it was worth because it sat a LONG time (almost 15 years). I've put another $5k into her since... tires, a few airbags, diesel genset, lube and fluids, etc. 14 states and 13,000 miles later, she's help up pretty well for us, knock-on-wood.

I'm thinking between $12k and $16k for what you describe. Pics would help... and NOTHING beats getting in and under the thing.

Well, first the good news. The MCI 5A was a great coach---for its day. We had a couple of them when I worked for the Yosemite Park and Curry transportation company in Yosemite National Park way back in 1970. How time flies.

Could run from the valley floor either to Fresno or Merced AND NEVER USE 4TH GEAR!! Sky high gearing as they once belonged to a Nevada highway transit company whose name I have forgotten. Could go 80+mph. 4 speed manual. 280/318 8V71N Detroit.

Handled very well with a nice ride and road manners. 96" wide. I scraped the rock wall coming into the park from Merced once to avoid a head on with a camper. Narrow road. Eventually got fired for it. Oh well.

Now the bad news. Rust was/is a problem. Parts can still be had from the factory, but keep your heart meds close when they quote you the $price$. Spend the $bucks$ and have the coach completely inspected/driven by a good bus mechanic.

Be willing to polietly dicker. Have patience. Other older 35 foot coaches are out there. Just perhaps the GM 4106 MIGHT be slightly superior. Personal opinion. And remember...it is not that life is soossss short...it is just that we are dead for sooossss long. :-) :-)
