I know it sounds ridiculous, but I can't get a definitive answer from anyone I've asked. I just bought a 6.2L GM diesel for my toad, and I want to know the correct oil to use in the crankcase. I've been told everything from 5w30 to 15w40. I need to run it before my service manual arrives.
Thanks, guys.

Super Tech 15W-40 is what The Snail (my wife's 1986 K-5 diesel) gets. Having said that, you have my deepest sympathy if you bought one.

I owed an 84 1/2T Chevy Stepside with the 6.2

Rebuilt it after balancing the engine. Doesn't spin too fast but it was so out of balance that it made a huge difference. A real sewing machine, IYKWIM.

Aside from fixing the cracked heads, cleaning up the intake ports, and an appetite for glow plugs, I thought it was super!

As always, thanks to all of you who responded. I've always heard that these things were boat anchors, but I also know of a bunch that run very well, including the one I now have. I drove it from NJ to Georgia with no disappointment- no leaks, no oil consumption, good mileage, and good acceleration and power. I was going to go through it before putting it into my toad, but I really hate to open a good running engine. The one universal complaint I heard is the injection pump, but not the heads. Oh well, I've always been a sucker for an orphan engine...

I had the misfortune to own a truck with one of those boat anchors in it & was never so happy to see a vehicle go down the road as I was with that one. I broke 2 cranks before I finally put a 350 in the truck and promptly sold it. What I learned was that, with a standard transmission, that engine is prone to breaking cranks. You need to balance the crank with the flywheel attached - they are balanced as individual components but they need to be line balanced as an assembly if you want the engine to last. If you don't they will vibrate - eventually that vibration will crack the mounts on one or more main bearings and then eventually the crank will break.

I have 2 6.5 TD in a 1994 Suburban and a 2000 Crew Cab.. Ran into a guy who ran an injection service and said add a can of type F ATF to the fuel every tank and the pump will be happy....Been doing it to both...the Burb has 205000+ and the crew cab has 105000+ and never a pump or injector problem with either of them....

Have to tell you about my experiences with the small GM diesels. I bought my first one in 1979 Olds wagon, four kids to haul around and the back seat of a BMW just not quite big enough. At that time the dealership was not the place to get it fixed. So after replacing half the glowplugs, i could at least get it started. A while later its running very poorly,by this time it is out of warranty, so my friend and I decide to Fix it.after making a wrench, looked at it for couple of hours finally figured ot how to take it apart. Govener mounting ring. twelve bucks later fixed. Could tke it apart blindfolded in three minutes after that. I saw a service bulliten from gm about fifteen years ago to prevent pumpfailure, it recommended adding a liter of ATF that would act as lubricant to counteract the removal of sulpherin the fuel.

I did run the old girl to 300 km when I got rearended by a drunk at 70 mph. Guess how fast he was going? Came through that one OK.

Still have a 98 with the 5.7 diesel sitting agaist the fence. JOE
