Ian -- Can you help Is there a way to start a "HELP LIST" on your BNO ? A "BNO ASSIST LIST" I also belong to a Classic GMC Motorhome Group - you know- the sleek looking M/H with the front wheel drive Toronado Engines - A guy named ROGER BLACK = started something called the "BLACK LIST" - a kind of "help" list - It's just a list of names and phone #s of people willing to help other Classic GMC M/H in trouble - the list is now HUGE - almost every state and province is covered - it's amazing - and it works. I know - I've used it and I've helped others - It doesn't matter if you don't know which end of a wrench to hold - you do know the local area - where the Walmarts/Autozones are - if there are any good Mechanics around - help doesn't have to mean getting dirty - just a frendly voice that knows where to send a guy in trouble in a strange place - so the more of us that put our name on the help list the better - kind of think of it like "Paying Forward" - willing to help another bus Nut in trouble Pete RTS/Daytona (Edited) |

Posting one's real name, phone number, and location, was never a great idea to do on the World Wide Web. Loonies abound, along with individuals interested in relieving affluent appearing individuals of their wealth. Do you really want to advertise the fact that you've got the bread for a conversion? Expensive tools, supplies and willing to share them with folks you don't know? It's nice to help friends, but the entire world reads forums... If I@n can muster up a form for those in need of immediate help, to fill out and have posted at the top (or side frame) of the forum, those that can help can reply directly and personally, to those looking for help. |

John's right. Another alternative would be a database which is only accessible to BNOers who have registered with username + password. I'll gladly put my entry in there. |

I volunteer to help out with any programming, if I@n needs it.. As for the help list, I may be in any of these places at any given time: Northridge/Porter Ranch, California Brandon/Valrico area, Florida Brooksville/Ridge Manor, Florida I'm not posting personal info here. If you need to contact me, write to JWSmythe[at]CGICoders.com first. I have experience with lots of things, and can usually troubleshoot most others. Give me a few months, and I'll know a lot more about heavy diesels. I usually have tools. Other than that, I don't have much to offer, unless you need an Computer/Internet/IT expert. |

On the links page you'll find George Myers'Coach Builders Bulletin and he has had a list like that for years. He sends it out annually with updates and you get to determine your amount of participation, Help, place to park for the nite, just want to talk about buses etc. Its a great little collection of articles from some good convertors with pictures of their mods and improvements.Jack Conrad had another article last issue, on his new instrument panel. Anyway George's list is called the Coach-Builders's List. |

John MC9 If you don't want to give your Name and phone # Then perhaps you can use your BNO Handle and give your email addy (printed with spaces between the @ to foil address gathering spanners) You should be WILLING to help - if you want to BE helped There's still a great deal of good in this world and many many fine people willing to help I've found that the majority of Rv's are great people - and bus converters - the cream to the crop |

David It's my understanding that George Myer's Coach Builders Bulletin has a subscription cost I wanted something that was freely accessable This B/B would be a great spot for it - I'd like to see it expanded to BNO ASSIST / SERVICE / PARTS LIST by adding Bus service places (repair / lowboy / etc) + bus parts supply places (new and used) Until I@N tells me to stop - I'll start adding then today Right now - I am on my way to help replace Rev. Morgan's throttle cable P.S. - this is my third bus bus Nuts rescue this month Pete RTS/Daytona |

What is proposed sounds like good idea, and I would love parts cross over number information to avoid being held at ransom so often in the future, however I suspect that this board is not free and in fact cost Ian bucks and time to administer (just like the free pet listing site I helped start - like a free no bricks or mortar humane society). And part of your proposal that sticks most in my eye's greed as attractive would obviously compete unfairly with those few retailers that to pay a minimal sponsorship fee to IAN to keep it afloat. (not that I can speak for Sir IAN , but this is on my conscience and I must state it so) |

---- And part of your proposal that sticks most in my eye's greed as attractive would obviously compete unfairly with those few retailers that to pay a minimal sponsorship ---- Thats not how it works... It is an ASSIST help directory. It does not supply parts unless someone has to buy them. This could possibly INCREASE the used of the boards retailers. It is also an ASSIST to find people that OWN a tool that someone might need when in peril on the road. This is ESPECIALLY true on weekends when the shops are closed. I would think the board would be more comfortable if it listed a phone number and/or email and a list of service/s that you can help with. In some cases it is just a warm place to have a cup of coffee, in others it will be information on who can be reached to tow such a large bus, other needs would be medical help/info to nearest hospital, or lend a hand on a repair. Don't take this to another world, it does not offer the impossible and it does not take away from current retailers. It is a good idea that has worked for many years for the GMC MotorHome group. Perhaps you should go to the site and see what is there. Ian runs a clean site and it pretty much parallels the GMC MotorHome site. It would be difficult to imagine that there could be a problem with retailers since it can only bring in business. If you don't know the area, and you have a break down, wouldn't you want to ask someone who knows which garages are the crooks and which will honestly try to help you? Or even just to point you to a store that will have the part at a fair price?? Don't put more into this than it is. It is just a tool to help you, like the yellow pages of BusNuts. Crane |

Bus owners in need of mechanical help (immediate or otherwise), that have posted that need here, have received assistance fairly quickly. Having an on-line list is redundant. And what good is it, if the list does not reflect the participant's location at the time the help is needed? I'll call Pete from "the list", but hell, he doesn't answer because he's on a trip out west.. But how many have Internet access when they need it most? A paperback publication listing names of fellow bus owners that can provide help, would be a nice way to go. Bus garages, truck repair shops, truck tire businesses, and fuel stops, would be great additions as well..... Things have worked well here just the way it's been. If and when I find that I can help someone, I'll offer my assistance, even if it's to drive the individual to where he can get help. That's what it's all about, ain't it? I wouldn't want -my- name and number published for every kook to use to their desire. And I would never recommend anyone post personal info on the web. Hell, that's one of the things a person should be made aware of, when they first learn to use a computer. There was a story in the local rag awhile back... A woman was robbed in a mall parking lot, after a man called her by name and acted as if he knew her from her family... The thief got her name while standing behind her at a store check-out. The credit card device posted her name on the checkout screen, easily read by those in line. Yeah..... ^$%$ happens. But it doesn't have to. |

Well John MC9 I have to agree with a lot of what you said. WHEN an internet connection was available, there was help from this board. TRUE I don't know how many have internet access when they need it! The list would not mean that you would find someone at home if called for assist. TRUE A paperback issue or internet page downloaded, (similar to the list) would be a great help. currently NONE available of the paperback either. Yes, things have worked well here, for those who have been able to get help, but how many...... Its all about helping each other, yes And there were thugs dressed as cops with a red light on an (unmarked) car that pulled a couple over and robbed them them. YOU AREN'T going to pull over if a red flashing light is behind you? Whats your point? Apples and Oranges. OK EVERYONE, NO HELP FOR YOU, JOHN MC9 messed it all up for you. Ya'll go home now and hope nothing ever happens to you. Don't call for no help if you are getting robbed or your bus breaks down. Can't trust anybody. Everyones a crook! BRAHAAAHAHAHHAhahahahaaaaa |

Oh come'on, Craney... This is I@n's board, not mine. I didn't "mess up" anything. Hell, I@n doesn't even like me (he's Canadian, you know, and I'm Italian.... it's a cultural incompatibility thing). Seriously... If anyone has a problem on the road, posting to this and/or the MAK board, will result in help finding them within short order. Those near the person, usually respond to the cries for help. There really isn't any need to post a list of names and numbers for the entire world to see, those that actively participate and willingly help others in need, will respond. And those that read here and know of people in the area of the hapless soul, will make the call for them. Things are well covered, from what I've seen in the past number of years I've been reading here. Your personal security, and that of your family, should not be taken so lightly. Years back, we could leave our front door open when we're out.... Today? Not on a dare. As I said earlier... Bus conversions usually represent a somewhat affluent owner; someone who has big bucks to toss at their hobby. Do you really want your name, number, street address, etc, to be so widely broadcast? There's a serious, and very sobering side to it. |

I@N Thanks - I understand - hope I didn't cause a problem It's a shame that it's come to this in these crazy times - liabilities / cyber creeps and such But John MC9 is right (don't let it go to your head boy) - when people are in trouble - if they post here on BNO that they need help - that works - and may be the way to go - But perhaps we can do something about the "service / parts source" part of the list ???? - Thanks again I@N - for your great service Pete RTS/Daytona |

I'm going to add my (newbie)$0.02 here even though it's not been solicited. Let's take, for example, Capt. Ron, who seems to live with Murphy (sorry Ron) and, from time to time, gets in a problem and posts it here. He doesn't seem to have any trouble sorting out the 'frick' from the 'frack' and without divulging too much info and manages to get out of his difficulties. We pay for 'Emergency Road Service' for those immediate problems. Medical assistance is only an *HP or 911 call away. While we all wish to be somewhat of the Don Quixote type, Knight in Shining Armor or Good Samaritan for our fellow BusNuts, when cool heads prevail, unless there's death, injury or fire.. the locals can take care of that...there can't possibly be an "Emergency" which would take any one of us out of our beds to drive miles to 'rescue' a fellow busnut! We all have problems fom time to time...and we deal with them as best we can. We're adult...so it's not time to act like children and panic. We'll always be there...for each other ...as best we can...without placing ourselves, our families or our personal information ...in jeopardy. Just my thoughts Bob |

Hi All FMCA has had this process in place for years. The way it worked was the member called the home office phone, answered 24 hours per day. The home office then called members in the immediate area of the needing member to relate the problem. We have only needed it once in 14 years as FMCA members but it worked like a charm. I digress to our problem. We had left Yellowstone park in the early am. By the time we got to Rock Springs WY, the transmission was slipping occasionally. I babied that thing as much as I could all the way to Denver. I had called the home office when I was reasonably sure that I could make Denver and told them the plight. Within 15 minutes, a member from Denver called me and suggested a shop in downtown Denver. I went straight there and the owner started tearing down the trans at 4 pm. He continued to work on it until I drove off with a rebuilt trans at 1 am. Now that is service from FMCA and the trans shop. I think this is what Pete is trying to get. The obstacle is how to make it work when you don't have a 24 hour home office. Figure that out and the idea can still take flight. Since I have personally experienced the benefit from a program like Pete is suggesting, I am willing to be part of it like most will if we collectively put our heads together for what is undoubtedly a simple solution. Don't let the idea die, instead think of something off the board that precludes all the whackos in the world ruining it for us and Ian. Then you will have a Busnut Rescue Program and the Board for backup. Rob 91 LeMirage XL Missouri |

Another solution... Inform a friend that you're traveling and let them know beforehand exactly how to access the board(s) and if there's a problem, call them and have them send up the flare for help and relay the answers to you. You would have to sure to carefully describe the problem so they could translate into text. We've seen this done a couple of times. |

Robert - Re: "there can't possibly be an "Emergency" which would take any one of us out of our beds to drive miles to 'rescue' a fellow busnut!" It doesn't have to be a 911 emergency... Breaking down in a 40 foot, 11 ton vehicle, aside the road in an area where you know no-one, can be a little traumatic, even to the well seasoned busnut.. Being able to call on a fellow busnut for some free advice, or to have that extra hand, when it's needed, is a major plus! I lack the mechanical experience of working on heavy equipment, but I have experience in other areas. If I can be of help, I'd be willing to get dressed at 3am and drive out to help someone to safety, or to get rolling. Hell, even having someone in the same town to talk to, is a plus. They may know where you can get the help you need.... |

"Wealth?" What wealth? I HAD a little wealth until I bought a bus. Now what's left of my wealth is all piled up in my "rent a wreck".. Anyway, I deal with "loonies" every day. I'm in the motorcycle business. It don't get any loonier! Whatever works is cool by me. Seems like some sort of a list, weather published by electronic media or otherwise, would be of benefit to traveling bus owners. What I have out here is a field to park in...if I got bad vibes from someone, that would be dealt with at that time...as they could remain rather isolated. I would think that the list is extended to bus owners, and not RVs, or any other vehicles. Most bus owners, are not going to do a lot of harm. Clearly, there are a few hombres, but they aren't going anywhere very fast. Whatever format suits...if any, works for me. I shoulda been writing down those phone numbers while they were posted! JR |

Hi Guys Many of you were kind enough to volunteer for my initial try at a "bus help/assist" list on the BNO board I@N (BNO Board owner) didn't feel confortable hosting the help list and that's OK - it's his board and his decision. But a day later - one of the volunteers - Dave Siegel suggested that he could host and maintain the list on the S/E Cruisers (an FMCA Chapter) magazine's club page-> http://www.cruiser-magazine.com Thank You DAVE !!!!!! A bunch have already signed up - could you / would you / guys like to sign up on this NEW BUS ASSIST LIST- the more the merrier Just CLICK here-> http://www.cruiser-magazine.com/Help_Assist_List.html Thanks Pete RTS/Daytona |

Pete and all, I am warning people not to put their name, address and other personal information out there for everyone to see. SECruisers' page says "Cruiser Magazine will NEVER sell or give this list to third parties", yet the list is on a public, non secure web page for everyone in the world to view. Although everyone should be commended for wanting to assist everyone else in our group, putting your personal information on non secure web pages exposes you to personal risk. There are alternatives to this through FMCA magazine and The Coach-Builder's Bulletin, so if you want to join a help list, it is my recommendation that you do so at either of those publications. However, to be clear, I do not advocate anyone registering their personal information on a public, non secure web site. If you need confirmation or clarification as to the validity of this warning, please feel free to contact the insurance company who insures your home and/or your life. Fair warning folks. Don't do it. Caveat emptor. Regards, Ian www.busnut.com |

Posting your email address brings forth tons of spam. There are automatic data collection "robots" (programs that search for specific data on web pages and log them in a file) that are used to collect email addresses. There are also robots that are designed to collect telephone numbers, street addresses, and other personal data. Try to imagine your cellphone being called a few dozen times a day, leaving messages trying to sell you something... using your minutes... Your street address is an easy mark, not just for mailbox "spam", but for anyone wishing to make an impromptu visit... Will your RV be there? Will you be home to protect your interests? Keeping your personal identity, telephone numbers and street address private, should be top priority. If you wouldn't think of driving around town with your name, address, phone number (and other personal information) atop your car, then you should not post it to the World Wide Web, either. PS: Now that most town records are available via the web, there is more personal information available about you, than you ever cared to allow to be known...... by simply typing in your address. And the web's reverse directory will provide your address, using your phone number. It's not "Your World", anymore. |
