I'm planning on moving to a smaller alternator that will be driven off the engine rather than the mitre box. It would be a single wire alternator to simplify things. Here's my question. Is a 100 Amp alternator enough. The only things that would be running off of it are: headlights, marker lights, tail lights, and dash gauges, and a small CB radio. Everything else will be running off the house system. I've got two 8D's right now and per your all's advice, I don't plan on changing that. Also, once I get this done - I'll have a Neihoff 300Amp alternator w/ a brand new voltage regulator for sale if anyone's interested. It was just completely checked out by a local auto electrical shop and was said to be in excellent condition. I can get model #'s and pictures if anyone is intereseted. Matt, I run a single wire 130 amp Leece Neville on my Eagle. I use a single 8D battery. No problems in five years. Replacement alternators can be found at almost any truck stop in North America. hth, Tq |

I run a 105 Amp 12V alt for the bus and have had no problems. I run a separate 150 Amp 12V for changing the house batteries. Ron |

Have you found a single wire 24V alternator yet? I'm planning the same thing. Actually planning on intalling a 12V for the house and a 24V to replace the gear driven monster. I think the local starter/alternator guy can build just about anything, but "off the shelf" might be cheaper. |

Hey Ros - the electrical system on my Eagle is 12v not 24v. I haven't even been looking for a 24V alt!! Interesting you should mention the local starter/alternator guy. They've priced me a 100Amp 12v single wire alt. for $59.00 new complete with a pulley that matches the one on the 8v71. Doesn't seem bad to me at all!! Matt 1979 Silver Eagle Model 05 |

Ron, Why so you use a separate alt for house batteries? I've seen this mentioned before but don't really understand the reason for it? Is one of yours gear driven and the other belt driven? Why can't both sets of batteries be charged by the same alt at the same time? This is all new to me, I've had my 4104 only since last Aug. Thanks, Gus |

Matt, Are you trying to eliminate the miter box? What about the radiator fan? I did see an article in BCM several years ago, where a guy put 2 alternators in side by side, one for bus, one for house bank, a very nice setup. However, he still used the miter box. David Anderson |

David, I am planning to eliminate the mitre box. I am going to keep the radiator fan belt driven. I don't have all the details together, but it's been done before. See: http://www.busnut.com/artdg05.html I don't have any plans to relocate my starting batteries as he did though. I've already had to replace the mitre box once and will never do that again. I plan on replacing the belts regularly as part of my routine maintenance. Matt 1979 Silver Eagle Model 05 |

The small single wire alt should be fine , BUT if you get a large set of House batts you will take a very long time to recharge them. A similar alt with an extrenal V regulator would be easy to change regulators on , if you decide there is a need for faster house charges.. FAST FRED |

Just got some prices...$249 for a new 140A, 12V single wire and $365 for a new 75A, 24V single wire. This is from a local alternator shop so it's good quality stuff. He can do a reman 12V for $130, but can't do the 24V in a reman. I really wanted to replace the 300A alternator but that might have to wait. |

Hi Gus...I want to have the house on a separate alt so I could use 1 A/C roof unit running down the road. I also have 1000 AH batteries to charge, if we are Walmart camping (headed to our destination in a hurry) we usully watch a movie or 2, 3 hrs + (not running the gen) on the 42" plazma /w surround sound in the solon, with the fridge (120v), lights (12v)and Hydro-Hot heat running...by morning the batteries can be run down aways. So I figured that it would be best and easier on the alt, to run a separate alt for the house only, so it wasn't trying to charge 2 sets of batteries. So far it's worked out great. The wife and I just got back from a 2 month trip down south (Mexico & AZ)and had no problems with power running down the road. Ron |

Ron, Thanks, how are they arranged, do they both run from the same belt? |

"I really wanted to replace the 300A alternator but that might have to wait." May I inquire WHY? Many coaches run these with belts , why not just move it to where you desire? These have seperate (increadibly stupid) external voltage regs , and are really EZ to modify for deep cycle house batt charging . FAST FRED |

My house system is 12V so the only thing left that is 24 are the lights and starting system. I don't figure I need 300A to compensate for that. I've also heard a few stories of the alternator breaking a gear and dropping parts into the engine. Anyway, I got a good deal on a belt driven 100A alternator from a fellow busnut. |
