My 10kw genny sucks dyed diesel from a dedicated 50 gal tank. All of a sudden, pick up filter from tank has been clogging with stuff that is dark and gooey. The tank was originally a transfer tank and has no bottom drain. What is the best way to clean such a tank? Is there some chemical that can be added to destroy the gunk or must the tank be emptied and cleaned manually? Thanks for the help.

Typical algae it sounds like. If you want to change a couple more filters, some biocide fuel additive will kill it and you won't have to pull the tank.

There are some mobile services that will come to your location with a separate, independent pump and filter setup. I think the "stand alone" approach would be better for the bus equipment and maybe as easy on the pocketbook.

I know of two that have used such services, but would have to call a truck parts/maintenance facility to locate one.

Really, the best way would be to remove it and steam clean it.You will be amazed at the crud build up. Put in a drain while you are at it.Otherwise you could spend money on filters too often and have to deal with plugging at the most inconvient time.I'm surprised more people don't have a separate fuel tank for diesel generators as dyed is a good bit cheaper.

For those of us who don't run their gen sets often enough, the separate tank is the kiss of death. I struggled with a gas genset for years, old fuel and nasty stuff in there. For light duty running the separate tank(gas or diesel) can't possibly be worth the slight saving on off highway fuel. I finally bit the bullet and acquired a diesel gen set which will be plumbed to the main tank. No more stale fuel problems, I hope.
