I am a newbie to bus/conversion, planning on retiring in 4 years. Want to look at a 1987 Prevost bus for sale in my area. Any suggestions as what in particular to watch out for. Bus is complete BUS "rebuilt" 6/92 4 speed, Allison Auto included but not installed. Any help appreciated.

Thx
Roger

I had an 87 from 1990 to 2005. The only bus related problem areas were rust on the firewall above and around the radiator and on the underside of the engine compartment top.

For whatever reason it seemed to like left side axle seals, especially the drive, and I had three cracked manifolds that affected the ability of the turbo to go to full boost. If it was driven in salt and sand as in the northeast it is possible the airbag bases have corrosion. If the coolant was not maintained properly and changed according to the schedule you can anticipate radiator blockage. I ended up having mine recored despite fanatical adherance to the schedule. The mechanical speedometer/odometer was a weak point and a replacement with an LCD odometer display was supplied by Prevost.

I had a few sensor problems, notably coolant level and turbo boost sensor. If it has the round turn and tailights it is not a DDEC coach (DDECI) and you don't have to worry about that stuff. Basically the coach was excellent and was very easy to work on.

Stick with a 1996 or newer Prevost in excellent condition. You should be able to pick up a low mileage (80,000 or less miles) 40 foot coach along with a Series 60 Engine for around $200K
You'll be riding in style and walking da dog at the same time.

Marathon Coach, the link is on the Bus Conversions web site, has a bunch of used coaches and they send them off of the lot with a warranty...just charge a little more for the rigs overall.

Good luck.

I love the way Eric spends Roger's money.
