I'm guessing this is just a sensor problem, but:

Lately, After starting the bus,(when it is in idle) the check engine and stop engine lights are luminated. After about one minute of driving, they go off.

Last night they went off, after a minute, then came back on. When I made it to the interstate, they turned off and remained off for the duration of our trip. ANY IDEAS???

press/pull the dianostic switch and count the check engine light pulses -

<> tell us the counts (could be 2/3/4 counts before a pause (depends on the computer (ECM)

<> tell us what make/Engine/ECM type
---> ex. Detroit/8v92/ddec 1 2 3 or 4

I would check your coolant fluid reservoir level. I have had this happen and I simply added a little fluid to get over the low level probe. The fuid expands as it heats up and the level rises over the probe which is why mine would go away. Could be another issue but I would check this one first!

A 99XL is likely DDEC4, S60 and Greg is right on. That is where I would go first.

Would most likely be:

1) low coolant level
2) high coolant temp level (not per your description)
3) low oil level
4) low oil pressure

or the sensor/sending unit malfunction/loose connection - HTH

Press the momentary switch to flash out the diagnostic codes (engine does not have to be running - ignition must be on). Watch the check engine and stop engine lights.Check engine light will flash inactive codes,stop engine light will flash active codes. First code might be 4 flashes, a short pause and 3 more flashes - this would be an example of code 43- coolant level low.After you record the codes, press the momentary switch again to take it out of the diagnostic mode.I have 2 Prevost XLIIs in the fleet I work with, the rest are H3-45s.Send e-mail if you have any questions.

I had the same problem and the fault code was always low coolant but you can only put so much coolant in the system. I found, after many other things, that ot was a bad sensor. So bad that it was found by accident. Everything looked ok until I found that the main stud that the wore goes to was actually loose inside the sensor. changed the sensor and never had a problem since!

Thought I'd get back to you all. You all were right. It was low on coolant. I added some, and the engine lights turned off.
