Numero uno: Drain crankcase and refill with Delo 100, 40w oil.
Take it out and run it hard for about an hour (or more).
Let her cool down, and run it down the highway again, and
see if it still smokes..

(make sure the air filter is clean, also!)

One bus I looked at, when I was shopping for a bus, smoked real badly in the test drive. A bus company owned it and they said there mechanic would check it out. Turned out it was a bad injector that was spraying too much fuel. The engine did not sound right on idle either.
They fixed this but I did not buy the bus anyway.

Good Luck

Check your air filter, all hoses and clamps that go from filter housing to turbo too.

Yep the oil has nothing to do with it.
Air cleaner, injecters, or maybe just a big foot like I have.

Califbob,

I believe if the oil is too thin, it'll blow by the rings causing smoke. But, if I remember right, it should show up with a blue tint.

From what I've been told, the air filter would be the first thing to check. It'll reduce the air flow, making the mix really rich.

It's been suggested that the oil leak on my bus could be from an oil of too low a viscosity. I'm still waiting on the shop. No big rush though, I won't be out there again for a few more weeks anyways.

First as the others have said, check the air filter. Then check for any other intake restrictions. If there is something in the air breather blocking the airflow it can cause this. Check to see if there is anything like a loose clamp on the output side of the turbo. It could cause this if there is a leak. Then check the other items that have already been mentioned pertaining to the rack, the injectors or the return line for the fuel. In fact check the return line after eliminating the air flow restrictions.

Guys and Gals? Could this be caused by a muffler coming apart inside and creating more restriction?

An exhaust restriction shouldn't result in black smoke...

An intake restriction, like leaves, mice, too high an amount of
oil or water in the oil bath type... can result in black smoke
under torque (btdt).

A stuck injector should produce black smoke at any rpm,
and a rough idle to match, plus some increase in idle speed...
(btdt: Mercedes, Peugeot, VW)

I'd check the easy to fix items first: the air cleaner, and the
hoses from the air cleaner to the intake. You'd want to locate
the reason why it's getting too much fuel, and not enough air.

If you can get a hold of one of those IR temp readers...check the temp at each exhaust outlet into the manifold to pinpoint a cylinder with a bad injector which should have a lower outlet temp than the other cylinders.

Muffler baffles pluged up-high exhust back pressure
Air cleaner box restriction - high vacuum on air inlet
Missing or out of adjustment delay valve and rack and injector adjustment out.
Not enough air to fuel ratio.
Air box check valves stuck open.

Randy, don't forget about the screen on the blower inlet. That's one more way to have a restricted intake.

The fuel air mixture is never too rich until the rack opens up enough to use up the air supply. This means that there will be no smoke on a light enough throttle if there is not enough air.

If you get smoke on most throttle settings, there is likely something else wrong besides too rich of a mix.

Good luck finding the problem.

I had a real problem with black smoke with my 6v92. I had what I thought was a small exhaust leak. It was a little louder than I thought it should be. I checked the blowqer screen with a mirror and it appeared to be clean. I reset the valves, injectors and rack with some help from a friend then moved on to the exhaust manifold leak. I found the manifold in four pieces. Repaired and now just a puff of black smoke onm take of and a little smoke in higher elevations, but all in all i think it solved the problem. The turbo now pulls about 14 #. Bob
