I think you need the ones marked 71A/92A. The others are for the MUI engine. Dallas |

Not if set up, adjusted and used within manufacturers recommendations. Dallas |

Anytime you shut the fuel flow off and keep inducting cool air you change the way the engine was intended to run. Then when the fuel flow returns you are getting incomplete combustion until the engine comes back up to temperature. If it gets the least bit out if adjustment they allow the injectors to continue to spray a small amount of fuel into the cylinders, that cannot burn, and consequently damage to the cylinder walls can occur. Unlawfull in must urban areas, and remember this-if jakes were the hot setup the manufacturers would install them when new. I believe the initial design was to allow truckers to stop better when way overloaded for the amount of brakes available in those days. ...JJ |

JJ: FYI, my old bus, the '68 GMC NewLook "Fishbowl" (T8H-5305-021) came from the factory with Jakes installed, and delivered right to the Seatle Metro transit authority. Rare? Probably. But GM made the bus and the engine. bb |

Most over ther road diesel engines come with jakes installed. My DD8V92TA has factory jakes which are all so controlled by the computer. They will not activate in Cruise control mode. The Jakes for a 71 and 92 series DD are the same except for the bridges. These have to be for the correct engine as the exhaust valves are more wideley spaced in the 92 series. |

For JJ: my experience plus some fact...I'm gonna swat at ya.... First, your comment contradicts itself: "Anytime you shut the fuel flow off and keep inducting cool air you change the way the engine was intended to run. Then when the fuel flow returns you are getting incomplete combustion until the engine comes back up to temperature. If it gets the least bit out if adjustment they allow the injectors to continue to spray a small amount of fuel into the cylinders, that cannot burn, and consequently damage to the cylinder walls can occur." Are you kidding? Hmmm. Jakes or not, when you come down a grade, you take your foot off the pedal and what happens? The ECU fully cuts fuel off to the engine. In the case of an MUI engine (one of those ancient old, non-electronic ones) small idle-amounts of fuel are still injected in and don't get burned. Sure seems like all those new and old engines (including mine) still work fine and don't get cylinder damage, regardless if they cut fuel fully off or not. Yes I'm being cynical. About the engine getting too cold.... Whenever I use my Jakes on a long grade the engine temp rarely goes below 175. USUALLY I just got finished dragging my bus's butt UP that grade and the engine is really hot... coming down the other side with Jakes simply cools it off to normal temps...and less than it would have using your brakes without those Jakes. But Jakes or not, coming down a grade is going to cool your engine. It certainly won't hurt it... Specifically, spinning an engine without fuel as long as it has oil pressure will not hurt it... in fact it probably helps because it's the liquid fuel washing oil off cylinder walls that causes engine cylinder wear...case in point propane engines do not wear at all because propane gas doesn't wash off that oil layer. Build a propane engine and don't break it in on gas for a few thousand miles, it won't break in!! Spin a diesel engine with no fuel? as long as it has oil pressure, no big deal. And "if" you were to get incomplete combustion until the engine gets back to temp, so what? It runs, runs fine, and a few tiny puffs of smoke after jake use cretainly won't affect mileage... Lou's question was, "does using the jake brake damage the engine in any way" No, it doesn't hurt an engine. Jakes (the subject of this thread) are NOT illegal anywhere... if you find a sign saying so, call Jacobs and their lawyers will get it removed pronto. "Engine brakes" are posted as illegal in some areas, because some of them make excess noise. But I don't see how that can hurt an engine... And as Gary mentions, Most Jakes these days ARE factory installed. This is so because they ARE the hot setup (at least until our country finally discovers Telma retarders) And the initial engine-retarder design (later sold to Jacobs thus the name "Jakes")was created by Clessie Cummins because back in 1931 while he was personally attempting to set a speed record for Cummins-powered diesel trucks driving coast to coast, he almost lost it on the Cajon pass in California, because diesels don't hold back coming down hills like a gas engine does. Having NOTHING to do with "way overloaded for the amount of brakes available", Clessie invented them solely as an additional safety measure for any vehicle running a diesel engine. Jj, it'd be nice if you answered with factual information rather than apparently uninformed opinion... (Message edited by boogiethecat on May 15, 2006) |

Gary....might want to check on your "facts".... "Jake Brakes not allowed", "No Jake Brakes Allowed" etc,......the signs are all over the west; everywhere there is a hill, a downgrade of any size within quiet little towns.....Seems to me...the use of them therefore is "illegal". Variations of the above signs perhaps, but the bottom line is...don't use them! Not sure how Jacob's lawyers can do much to refute the local enforcement folks. Hurt an engine or not, it might hurt one's pocketbook....or their ego! FWIW RCB |

Check out this link and find that it is a registered trademark and can't be used on a street sign. They will sue a city to have removed as they did in Independence, Va. I work in the logging industry and have personally seen this play out in court. http://www.jakebrake.com/about-us/noise-concerns.php FWIW, Install the correct muffler and you won't have any problems. My bus has Jakes and a quiet muffler and I have never been pulled over for it, but Turman's log trucks get all the time on the same road. |

short answer. Yes they can be used. Long answer. You need to have the jake feature enabled in the computer(turned on). You will be looking for wire #621 cavity B and wire #622 cavity A, set the clearance at .059 not .064 jake makes both tools. Hopes this helps Don |

Ditto Dale's reply re the muffler. I've had 5 years (well...in June) of experience with mine and you simply can't hear them. The muffler is huge. Not looking forward to the day it needs to be replaced.... Speaking of which...wonder what is going to happen to the price of tires with the oil situation? (different thread, right?) Hate to think of it. Mine is a 10 tire coach.... RCB '64 Crown Supercoach (HWC) |

I ditto Don's reply! Also on the other fact, yes little "burbs" everywhere are attempting to restrict the use of "engine brakes"! Please note that I gave up trucking in 2000 so I've been away for a while, but I personally received several tickets for using "Jake's / enginge brakes" and every time I turned them over to a lawyer I had on retainer thru the Owner Operators and Independant Operators Association and every time the Judge overruled and thru out the ticket when the lawyer asked if banning a safety device (Jake brakes intended to help assist in the braking of large trucks) was #1 safe? #2 legal? #3 in the best interest of the general public? Now before y'all get flamed up keep in mind this was 5-10 yrs ago! Things could have and most likely have since then! Also keep in mind I was sort of a rebel back then with 10" straight stacks on a 550hp CAT which unless I purposely wanted them to rattle loud they didn't, but whenever I saw one of those signs I did it on purpose just so I could let the lawyer handle it, as he'd told me more than once that they were infringing on our rights and safety! Now if dad would just let me put a jake on "my bus a Setra with a DDEC 8V92" and take the muffler off and run true duals straight out the back! Wow that would be a great sounding bus! At least to me anyway but I'm half deaf anyway seems like everything I ever owned from cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc were always loud! Now what was I rambling about? I can't think for that loud truck out in the shop rumbling, and who left it running? after all I am the only 1 here right now! LOL! |
