Hello all,

Just purchased an '80 MCI Model 9. We are excited! We are taking a year to travel with our 4 children across the US. I am sure I'll be posting many other questions here...but so far this is what I need to find out.

1. Does anyone know where I can get a couple top hinge pins for the windows? I'm not too far from US Coach in NJ...would they have them?

2. Any suggestions on where to mount a stereo for the driver?

3. Where in the world is the washer fluid resevoir? I can't seem to locate it!

In anticipation of your help, I say thanks now. This is a great BBS. Is there a place to post pics of a bus?

Hi Tim,

Welcome aboard! This bbs has a picture upload function built into it. Please refer to "Formatting" in the left sidebar. There IS a limit as to the file size you may upload, but if you try and fail, please email any pictures to me and I'll resize them for the internet and send them back to you.

Luke at US Coach is, indeed, a trusted parts and service dealer in the East and you need not hesitate in going to see him. You, as many before you have, will likely get more than fair treatment from Luke. He's also a regular on this board. Find his details on our "Links" page.

No thoughts on the stereo, but I think the 9's w/w filler is behind the MCI logo on the front. Please correct me if I'm getting the 9 mixed up with another model.

Thanks for the compliment on the bbs and congrats on your new bus acquisition.

The window washer tank is behind the lower door beneath the electrical panel door...just below the drivers window. If it's still there. The books refer to this area as the "tool compartment."
The window pins are everywhere...Luke, Nimco, anyone that has removed windows has them laying around. I've got 14 of the things here somewhere. You're welcome to them..all I'll have to do is find'em.
The radio is easiest mounted in the dash to the right of the instrument panel. There's room behind there...keep in mind that the bus chassis is 24V, and most radios are 12VDC. Be sure you tap off a 12V lead. Don't use the small diode set that has 12V source...that's the headlight diode set and you don't want to use them for power. May be a 12V lead in the electrical panel. Mounting a radio above in the destination sign area puts it out of reach...remote would solve that? Think about what you plan to do with the dash panel and use that as a guide.
Good luck, JR

Thanks for the information gentlemen. I'm sure I'll be hitting you up with more questions as time goes by! I'm going to swing by US Coach tomorrow or Friday. I only live about 20 miles away. I have a feeling that place will be an invaluable resource. I'm pretty excited. We leave on the 24th of June. We're hoping to have all the little things tweaked the way we want within the next week so we can take it out for a short shake down trip. Again...thanks for the help!

Hey Tim
I get excited when I see someone get their first bus. I am close to possibly getting one shortly and my mind is running on fast idle LOL. I am doing my research now so I can make the right decision so far everything is a + and there is one possible negative but if that negative is there I’ll keep looking. But congrat’s on your new baby and enjoy.

Dallas may have seemed rude, but he's just being realistic. It's
just the way it really is, when you buy a tired old gal...

The first trip's a blast. It's the future trips, when you realize
that the company that last owned the bus, gave in to the cost
effectiveness of it, and sold it...

Do yourself a favor.... Do not, under any circumstance, fall
in love with her too soon.

She's been used by others that once took great care of her,
then abandoned her for a younger model..

She ended up with being used and abused, by those she
thought really cared...

You may have bought a very neurotic bus., one that's been had
and re-had, and is very cynical of any new appointee to her welfare.

It may take year$ of tru$t, and a$$urance, before she can
provide you with love in return..

Until then, treat her with caring respect, but caution.

Thanks,

I understand the reality of buying a used bus. I am in the trucking industry...I have purchased used commercial equipment. I understand the pitfalls. I know the bus is going to never be completely free of defects. I'm not expecting it to be. If I wanted that, I would have purchased a much much newer, if not brand new coach. I just need it to get me from here to there with relative ease...most of the time. Thanks guys...

It oughta' do that, easy 'nuff! Better than a "stick and staple", anyway!
You made a good choice!
