I have a spare Kubota 15K V1902-BG1 generator in one of my bays. Missing a few parts such as water pump, radiator, alternator, and fuel pump. Well I put a fuel pump on it, had to use ether, and she started up (for just a few seconds) then shut down.
Very hard to start without ether. I pulled the head to take a peek. Before I get further, any suggestions? Since it did fire up, do you think it may be fuel starvation since it died? I loosened the injector tubes at the engine and fuel is definately making it there.

I had the same thing going on with my Kohler....would run as long as I had the starter button down.

Turned out to be a bad voltage regulator......engine will not run if not producing electricity.

Most of the better gensets have an oil level sensor. If the oil's
too low (or the engine's on a hellish angle), the engine will start,
but not continue to run. The start switch usually overrides any
safety devices and sensors; let it go, and the sensors take over.

Check the oil level first, and anything else that might have a
shut-down sensor feature.

A small note about Kubota engines.

Never use ether to start them. According the the manufacturer it will cause severe engine damage in a glow-plug equipped engine.

The start sequences are Preheat for 15 to 30 seconds, Starter engages and if not fuel pressure present the starter will shut down or the engine will not run. ( fuel pressure switch on top of fuel filter assembly.)

You should also have a Primer knob or lever along somewhere around the fuel pump or injector pump area with possibly a small valve at the last injector line on top of the engine to bleed air out while priming the system.

If its a package unit there should be a large solenoid with a plunger that pulls open the throttle linkage to turn on fuel flow or shut down the fuel flow when you want to stop the engine. If that solenoid is not operating when you engage the starter you will not get full fuel flow to the injectors. A minimal amount of fuel will appear at the injectors at very low pressure which is passed back through the bleed return line from the top injector fittings.

Now you said you don't have a water pump?
What else is missing?
Was this a salvage unit or did someone steal parts from it?
