I am using, on my 05 Eagle, countersink rivets S/S 3/16" on 1/8" aluminum flat smooth siding. The heads are just a hair below the surface. When the time comes for painting what type of filler should I use to hide the rivets, that wont pop out, I worry that the GOOP might not stick to the rivets and minor indents. Thanks...... Any quality brand of autobody filler will work fine. The hard part is getting the oil out of the edge of the rivet hole. That's what usually makes the paint pop off around them. Try a strong surfactant such as TSP and rinse really well, or try a steam cleaner before you put filler on. Cheers...JJ |

Ahoy, Ken, My -01 Eagle is all flush riveted -w- 0.080" aluminum skin, and 3/16" rivets. About 25,000 miles ago. There are many places around the rivets which have cracked the paint. Rivets do "work" under load, and will crack the paint around the rivets. How much they "work" is dependent on the loading, and also the faying material. In my case, I used butyl rubber, which is a sealant, not an adhesive. Even a good adhesive, with an appropriate spaced thickness will be quite flexible in terms of attach stability compared with a rivet through the skin and into structure. Hence, the rivet carries the load, and moves round a bit. I've likened my bus to a Tailhook airplane which has had a lot of cat shots and aerobatics. Good luck. Enjoy /s/ Bob |
