Ok, a lot of you are waiting for the finished ceiling! Me too! Actually I got everything I needed yesterday to do the bedroom ceiling. Figured I would start there in case of $%#^ ups. Well doing as I was told from local upholsterer, I did, but only wasted 1 piece of material. Not a big deal but it could have been. If I weren't trying to do some fancy stuff, it would have been done but you know me. Gotta be a little different! Anyway, I will post pics later on of what I did on my picture site. I'll be finished with the main piece in about an hour from now. I have been takin pics all thru this ordeal to give you an idea as to what I did to come up with the finishing touch. We were going to incorporate the fancy junk up in the rest of the coach celing but after all this, maybe not. It depends on what kind of feedback I get from you guys. It's just time consuming, not really hard, and VERY HOT out today! I think I lost 2 lbs so far of water weight and still more to come!

Later...

Pictures are up of main section in Br.

Whew, I think I'll leave the fancy junk to the pros!

All I need to do now is the two sides and that room is DONE! :-) Oh and the two sides will overlap the main section on each side by 3 iches to give the ceiling some dimension. In other words the center main section will have a raised effect from the sides!

Hey Ace
I went to your web site and can't find the pics, did you hide them? Anxious to see them. BTW, great job on the interior.

No screws! No glue! I applied the vinyl over 3/8 plywood covered with 3/32nds foam underlayment that is used for going under the newer laminate floors. I rolled the edges and contacted and stapled it on the back side. As for the whole assy.? I used what is called a xmas tree fastener. It presses in pre drilled holes in both pieces of plywood one side being the back of the finish side and then the other end presses in the upper sub ceiling side! These holes MUST be drilled thru both pieces before any uphostery work is done! They will hold covered 1/2 inch plywood easy so I am comfortable with them hold the 3/8ths. If I was to do it again, and I'm sure I will in the front of the bus, I would change one thing. I wouldn't roll the foam underlayment over the edges. I would cut it just to the edge. Make sure you stretch the heck out the vinyl too and if need be, you can use a heat gun to soften it so it stretches even more! The tighter the better!

Hi Ace,

Would 1/4" plywood or luan work instead of the 3/8"?

Greg the xmas tree fasteners wouldn't hold thru anything thinner than 3/8ths but you can always find another way to hold it up then sure anything would work!

Several days another type of fastener was discussed which is something like a heavy duty Velcro.
The nice thing about this type of fastener is that no precision holes need to be drilled in each each item.

Ace, those pictures are great! Your bus is really something to be proud of (even by the standards of the POG whom I know you love). Beautiful workmanship! When do think you'll be complete?

I hope John does remenber the other fasteners, I would very much like to hear what they are. I have long planned a similar ceiling covering, but using 1/8 masonite, upholstery foam and vinyl with maybe some decorative inserts. Removable, replaceable, lightweight. In my minds eye, I was going to use heavy duty velcro, but I would be very interested in alternatives, espcially better ones.

Just as I found the xmas tree fasteners, I found some new stuff similar to velcro but has strands of wire and there are no fuzzy side and hook side. Both sides are like little ball head pins and lock into each other. VERY strong and maybe TOO strong for the thinner boards.

I was going to use luan, door skin or masonite but was afraid of the wavyness. The PRO converter here uses 1/2 inch ply on all the H3's that are used for leasing out to bands and such and has never had one fall down. The good thing about having removeable panels is you can change your design anytime you want, if you want and chase overhead wires etc. without a lot of demolition or if you accidently rip it, it (one bad piece) can be replaced instead of a whole ceiling!

The upholstery foam wasn't cheap from the local here so that is why I opted for the closed cell foam that is used under laminate flooring and found at big orange for 25 bucks per 100 foot roll. It gives the right amount of cushion for the vinyl and is easy to work with.

Thanks Jim for the encouragement but POG i'm not! As for being complete? Are they ever? :-) I still have a lot to do up front as in overhead cabinetry, window shades, electronics which are all big $$$ items and with my work a little slow right now, I figured I would tackle some of the labor items. I'm figuring the ceiling should be done by the time I head to Timmonsville for the rally and if not then for sure by Jack's. I know I will have front shades installed by Jack's. It really all depends on how work goes and money coming in. That will determine how fast anything gets done!

How's your H model coming along? Got any updated pics? I know you were gung ho there for a while!

Just got a phone call from Jack that inspired me to get back out there do some more. Ok I did the 22 inch side panel in the BR ceiling. It was a LOT easier than the 33 inch center panel with the cut outs! That one panel took just about all day yesterday and this side panel took about an hour this morning from start to finish. This gives you an idea as to the step or dimension I was referring to as it overlaps the center panel. On the album site you can also see a panel I practiced on with all the squiggly mirrors and another of the LR ceiling being trial fit!

Awe... just kidding! That was in a coach I recently visited that gave me some ideas! :-)

If only mine was half as good as some of those I'd be happy!

Ace: I have the same thoughts on hanging panels
for my ceiling. A description or photo of the
fasterners you used, and purchase location would
be of great help. Thanks so much. ARTHUR

Arthur I just added a pic (very last one) of the fasteners I used. It's a little blurry but it will give you the idea. I purchased these thru a local upholsterer who ordered them in special (overnight) from a company called Abco I think in Orlando.

If need be, I can probably find out more info as in if they sell direct or not. The local upholster can get them for you. Company called Emo's located in Lakeland, Florida on Combee road! Ask for Angel! I spent like 40 bucks per 100 which included shipping charges (I presume for gas)

Greg, the walls are plywood covered with laminate on the bottom half and textured (paintable) wallpaper on the upper half seperated by a piece of stained chair rail to sort of match the laminate.

Thanks
Ace
