I am looking for info. on a 76 fishbowl with the 2 speed trans. I have one I use on the farm to pick up and store square bails of hay in. Question is why does the bus rake gears badly when I try to put it in drive. I have to shut down the engine start it and put in gear at the same time. Once its in gear it operates fine. I see a electric soleniod valve on the top of trans Does this have something to do with this problem? Any help is appreciated. Tim

I owned a 61 fishbowl for years as my first bus project. I too had to shut down the engine to switch to forward or reverse. There are micro switches on the bottom of the shifter that active the solenoids on the tranny. I had a VH-9 in the bus. I would have someone shift the gears and check the continuity of the leads to the valve. If they are not active when shifting takes place, I would first change out/clean the switches and then replace the valves.

Good luck!
Grant

According to Loren Joplin The later clutches that were available from GM Caused this problem. I have a toggle switch on the Dash (that I wired in ) I simply tuck it in gear flip up the toggle switch and hit the start button. The toggle switch returns to centre when released. This set up simply bypasses the neautral safety switch. No grinding. Step on the go pedal and away you go. I can get the terminal numbers on the main panel to hook your toggle switch if your interested..

Hi Paso one if you wouldn't mind I would like that term no. That will work ok for what I am doing with the bus. This was apparently a common problem with these transmissions.Your switch connects this term. to the positive supply or negitive? Thank you for your input. Tim

Hi Tim
You are just jumping from one terminal to the other terminal I believe it is from # 19 to # 29 but wait I will drop my panel and confirm the numbers. By using a momentary toggle switch you become aware that when the motor starts it is ready to go. ( in gear) In the 60's GM had weak nuetral safety switches and we often had to just stick a cotter pin between the two terminals to get the cars going. Paul

I confirmed in the sevice manual wiring diagram the terminals are 19 and 29 If you have a manual for your 3751 you can confirm. You can't do any harm by connecting the terminals. A wire with two aligator clips on the end will tell you right away clip them on the terminals and stick it in F and bump the starter. Then you can hard wire it with a momentary toggle switch. Paul

Hi Paul term 19-29 brings on the starter as soon as the main power switch is turned on. What I was looking for was the terms that the shifter switch was wired to so I could simply jump out the safety but still use the starter button. Do you have a fishbowl book the book on the 3751 will not be of use in this case as 3751 did not have a auto trans and safety switch. Thanks. Tim

Okay.... My 5303 the terminals are 19 and 29 and my wiring diagram shows that. I was orginally told by Loren Joplin that the terminals were 19 and 21 as it turned out it wasn't. I determined it was 19&29 by trial and error You might want to call him as he has 60 plus fishbowls. or try his 19-21 His phone # is 951-943-2354 My unit was built in Canada so it must be not the same as your 3751.
