I just finished a trip to Florida with my grandchildren. When I was 40 miles out of Knoxville Tenn. I started having a vibration around 55 mph. When I slowed down it went away. I pulled over at the first exit and checked all the tires and everything was ok I got back on the road and up to 55, and when it shifted into high the vibration started again. I stopped at the next exit a truckstop and it was 2 quarts low on transmission fluild. I have a 8v71 with a 740 auto transmission. When filled up it did the same thing only with almost no vibration. When it shiftes from third to fourth if I was going down hill it will shift and run correctly. As soon as you put pressure on the trottle it acts as if it wants to down shift but can't and keeps the vibration and slows down until you manually down shift it to third. (this is how I got it home) up and down hills shifting to third up hill shifting to high down hill. I had to stop for fuel, and checking the transmission fluid level it was ok but, when I tried to back up reverse was no longer there. You can't even feel or hear it go into gear.Sort of like the linkage was disconnected.(it wasn't) shifting it through all the gears trying to get it in reverse is suddenly ran ok except for no reverse for about 75 miles until I hit a bump in the road and the whole thing started again until I got home. a very long night. My questions are? 1.Is there a possible simple solution like a filter clogged or a vacuum type modulator possibly bad? this would be nice. The bus had not be on the road in a year. 2.If it needs to be rebuilt, Who rebuilds this type of transmission? A regular transmission shop?. I live in Ohio. 3. What is the cost of getting one rebuilt? or buying a rebuilt one? 4.Where can you get a good used one? and is this a good Idea? Anybody out there that can tell me any of the information I am asking for or have had the same experience I would appriciate any information thanks carl mci 9 |

I never thought about them because it can on all on a sudden and going up hill. If it was the u-joints wouldn't there be a clunk when to let off the gas petal from the slack in the bad bearing? carl 79 mci 9 |

bad u-joints aren't going to cause no reverse or shuddering in 4th. Probably a plugged up filter or clutches going out-which will cause debris to plug up the filter and cause valves to stick, causing the problem.Drop the pan and expect to see a lot of fine debris in it. Rebuild time. If pan is clean, yeah right, then a valve is sticking. They are just like a trans in a car, only a lot bigger and cost a WHOLE lot more to fix.If it needs rebuilt, you can: install a used trans, not recommended as it is a lot of cost and labor to RandR, install a rebuilt unit which is good if the shift points are correct and don't create issues that some owners have had....see some previous posts back in winter, or have trans from coach rebuilt. If you have the capabilities to remove the old trans yourself, which few of the bus nuts are able to do, you will save a great deal of labor$$$$.Replace u-joints while you are at it. They are suprisingly cheap like shocks. |

I better correct my first statement before the flames start. Bad u-joints won't cause the type of shuddering problem you described. They will cause light shuddering with acceleration at highway speed as they start to go bad and quit when you leave off the throttle. As they are so low in price, apparantly because they are used so much in so many vehicles, replace them if they never were or are in question.Remember to grease them regularly. That shudder was probably the fourth gear clutches slipping, which started shedding clutch material, which started plugging the filter. when you shut it off, some of the debris dropped off the filter which allowed the pressure to rise back to normal for a little bit.5 bucks says the trans needs rebuilt. |

My two cents worth, make sure it is not your linkage,if it is not engaging properly it will shift in and out of gear it will seem like you have trans problems hit a bump it the road if your not up to rpm it slides into next gear.Just reccently put new rebuild in one of my 9s beefed up 871 took out for test drive ran great.A few days latter had`a charter thats when it started acting up same `as what you said it was the linkage. |

Dave been there done that .. I installed a tran's cooler on one of my buses because Gray line told me the trans was getting to hot and i put in a cooler system and filter on the system .. the only thing was maybe a little to late the clutches were in to bad of shape to work and there you go rebuild time ...well #$@^ happens.. hope things work out ..I'd check the linkage and U joints first and the electrical hook ups some times the vibration make electrical things look worse than they are |
