G'morning all. I have a mystery part on 6V92 TA engine in my '82 GMC RTS that I can't quite figure out what it's function is. It's a cylinder mounted to the oil pan horizontally, with two oil lines running from it. On the bottom of the cylinder (side of the tube part, but pointing down), there's what appears to be a VERY large hex nut with an opening in the middle. When I look into the opening, it looks like a white sponge inside. I have oil coming out of this opening. Is this normal?? Some people I've spoke with told me that the older DD motors have this thing where if they idle too long, there's a buildup of oil in the heads, and they drain off onto the ground. They weren't very clear on how or why, and it doesn't make a lot of sense for me to have a motor designed to intentionally lose oil in such a fashion. I'll be perusing my parts manuals tomorrow, I was hoping someone would have a good answer for me, hopefully better than the books would have (part name, and R&R instructions) |
