The bus hits the road in October. At least, that's the plan, if I get the vacation I asked for. *crosses fingers, toes, and eyes* The plan now: Leave New England, drive south, visit grandmother in St. Cloud, FL. Any routes to take (or avoid) for that run? I'm planning to run through NYC and probably DC at night (11pm to 4am-ish)...any better ideas. I'll be driving my Ford B-700 (fully converted, gas 460, happy at 60-65), probably towing either my wife's K-5 Blazer (~5500lbs) or her Festiva (1700lbs). Yahoo Maps gives me 1300 miles & 20 bours road time. |

I would go out thru Penn to avoid NYC/NJ and Bltimore/DC areas. I know 78 is a no no this summer work on the roads close to Jersey on the commuter lanes. head out 80 or 84 and drop down to 78 thru Harrisburg south on 81, East again on 66 to 17 south (its 4 lane not to bad on the stop lites) pop back onto 95 south at Fredricksburg. Its not as out of the way as it looks and will ease alot of hassles and grey hairs. |

When going past Washington, leave 95 and take the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel after the tunnel, use the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and take that back to 95. Also, there is a routing around Richmond, VA. (maybe 195) You'll see the sign for Rocky Mount, NC. depending on the time of day, it will save you a little time and aggravation. |

John, I would advise staying away from DC in the middle of the night during weekends. The second span of the Wilson Bridge is still being constructed. The 295/95 (southern) Interchange at WB site is frequently closed/rerouted on the weekends as well as the Mixing Bowl" 495/395/95 Interchange to Richmond. The projects are less than 10 miles apart and on weekends there are occasionally tremendous backups through the corridor into the wee hours of the night. There is no real easy way or time to drive through the area. Best bet: Enter the Beltway at high noon on a weekday, pass through the Mixing Bowl before 2:00PM, and you should be okay. Otherwise: I'd pull over in Laurel, MD(about 10 minutes North of the Beltway), find the Motel 6 and go enjoy some horse/farm country. These two websites should help you keep informed of the traffic changes, though I've seen the plans change or get postponed week to week. I don't know why. http://www.wilsonbridge.com/ and http://www.springfieldinterchange.com/ If you can't get access to a computer while you are on the road, see if you can find a Washington Post somewhere. It frequently carries the latest updates. Hope this helps. Doug R |

No tunnels for me--I have propane. For that matter, doesn't that also make the Tappan Zee Bridge a no-no? Bummer. Doug: I have a bus. Why would I need a Motel 6? Thanks for the help, guys. I've done NYC before, & didn't have any problems driving through at night. However, that was in a car, and I seem to recall taking a tunnel. I might well decide to bypass it this time. And YES! I got the time off! Florida guys: what are the chances I'll need A/C in early October? My wife says I won't...I'm not sure I should believe her. |

Don't know where you are going in Florida, but I lived in the Fort Lauderdale area for five years and needed A/C 99% of the time. Richard |

Florida in October can vary. Also what do you and your wife consider a comfortable temperature? If you are parked in the sun, you will probably need some AC. If in the shade and you are comfortable in upper 70s-low 80s, maybe not. Also close to the coast usually has more off shore breezes that help. Jack |

Her: anything between 80-120, as long as the humidity is 75% or higher. Heat simply does not bother her. Me: 75-80 is fine, 85 if it's relatively dry. No matter...later today, my bus will have A/C. When I mentioned wanting a 12v genset, and ahving trouble working out an A/C system, my friend got an idea...this usually results in something interesting. This was no exception: 1.5 litre diesel engine (from a rusted VW Rabbit), big 250A alternator I think came from a semi tractor, and spinning 2 Frigidare A/C compressors. I left space to plumb stuff like this when I did the conversion...didn't think I'd use it yet, but looks like I will. He finally mentioned it to me yesterday morning (he didn't want to say anything until it was running). NOW I know why my wife didn't want me to put anything in one bay. |
