Can anyone help me figure out how to make my brakes release on my mc9? It was ok when I parked it 2 weeks ago. I have 120 lbs of pressure but it won't release. I tried to put air in under the drivers seat but nothing happened. We are ready to take a weekend trip. Marc

Some times you can put it in reverse and try to back up and it will release them. Do this after the normal release procedure.

Marc: reach down and simply pull up on the brake treddle foot pedal. Often on 9's they will not return back up all the way. A little wd-40 works wonders.

I have had the same problem on mine. Press the brakes after releasing the parking brake and that did the trick on mine.

Mine got stuck last year and no play with the pedal and brake release would get them unstuck.

Finally had to climb underneath and "tap" some of the air valves with a hammer - it got unstuck and hasn't been a problem since.

Do you mean that the air ride seat has no air supply? Or, are you adding air to the air chuck in the tool compartment? If that is the case, you may have a check valve or some such stuck...check the tank drains and verify that all tanks have air.
The parking brake may be your problem.
If you haven't already figured out the problem, try pushing down the park brake button, and then depress the service brakes hard and hold them down for 5 seconds or more. Do this when the gov cuts out. You can also try applying the service brakes when the gov cuts out and then depressing the park brake button. Both methods should release the park brake...which is a common problem.
The other posts are good info...would indicate that your brake cams or DD3 chambers are not returning properly and need servicing. Check for air leaks at the drive axle chambers when the service brakes are applied. You can also see the slack adjusters move. check all wheels (be careful and don't get run over) to see which slack adjusters may not be retracting. Be sure that the coach rolls easily before heading out...you'll have major issues with brakes dragging. Fire, loss of some braking...
Good luck, JR

Thanks for all the ideas. I even talked to the mechanic at Horizon coach, who asked me to do some of the things you all said to do,but with no success. We gave up the trip, but we need to use it this week. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again guys, Marc

Marc -

The correct procedure for releasing the parking brake on your MC-9 is as follows:

1. Build air pressure to 120 lbs (or governor cut-out).

2. Release parking brake (push button down).

3. Apply service brake completely (floored) and hold for 5 seconds.

4. Release service brake.

5. Coach should roll at this point. If not, repeat steps 1 - 4.

If this doesn't release the brakes, let us know, there are some other tricks you can try.

Do NOT apply the service brake FIRST and then release the parking brake, you run the risk of setting the DD3s even more securely!

And to add to Rj's excellent and by-the-book instruction....

For a coach that has sat for a while....

After doing what RJ wrote, put it in gear, both forward and backwards and give it some fuel.

The brake linings may have rusted to the drums, and a bit of force may be needed to get them to break free.

Not all of us can afford a cement parking pad, and if parked on the ground, this will be quicker to happen.

Even if you aren't going to drive it, it's good to get those brakes released once a month so they don't fuse in place.

happy coaching!

I think I'm going to jack it up and block it securely so I can get underneath and see if the cams are moving. I can't seem to break it loose by doing all the things the book says to do. I talked to the mechanic at Horizon coach today again and he directed me this way. He feels confident that the shoes are locked up even if it's only been setting 2 weeks. Thanks guys. Marc

Well, I finally got my brakes loose. Both sides of the drive axle were rusted to the drums in just 2 weeks. I went underneath to make sure the cams were loose. Then I took a piece of rebar and a 3 lb. hammer and hit the metal part of the shoes. after I got one side loose I started the engine up again and rocked back and forth till it got free. Thanks again. Marc Thank you for posting your final solution. Too many times questions get posed and possible answers provided but the final solution that worked never gets revealed. Again Thank you.
