My output retarder has a swith on the dash, on and off. It does not seem to affect the deceleration of the coach if it is in the on or off position. I this retarder air or electicaly operated? Transmission is a MTB 648.

Hello Robert.

It depends on how the retarder has been set-up or designed to work.

Many retarders activate with a brake application, giving you somewhat undetected blended braking.

The retarder may be in there doing its job of helping extend brake life.

Also, many have settings for various levels of retarding, and yours may not be set the way you might want them, once you get this figured out.

Get the books and find out what it is supposed to be doing, and to what degree it may be changed. With a bit of luck, you should be able to rig an indicator light, or figure out a way to activate it while coasting to check on it.

happy coaching!
