Just installed a allison 730 trans from a donar R T S in my 1974 GMC 4905. I drove it last weekend about 300 miles and it worked great. Then it started to bog down and I could only get about 45 to 50 mph out of it. I checked ATF and it was about 1 gal low ( i have a pretty good leak ) put 1 gal in and took off. No improvement over that 30 miles. Stopped and removed and cleaned the small screen behind the plug. It did not look clogged or dirty. Took off again, no improvement. Next I changed the fuel filters and got no improvement. I don't have a tach so I can't tell what the engine is doing but I am sure that the trans is not slipping.

Where do I start?

can you feel the shift points..... first to second, second lockup, which feels like a shift, and then second to third. 45 to 50 could be staying in second gear.If you are going, say 45 and move the shift lever to 2, does the trans do a downshift to second if you leave off the throttle for a few mph?

Check to make sure the shifter is moving the tranny lever through ALL positions.

Check the modulator valve. Also check to make sure air pressure from the throttle is getting down to the valve.

Then check the governor.

I bet he was still low on fluid so the 2nd to 3rd gear inhibitor switch kept him from shifting into third.

Been there, done that.
