Is repowering with a 6v92ta and keeping the spicer 4spd a good option? Are there lots of things that have to be changed? I know I'll have to change the radiator. I like the 4 spd fine I just would like to get hill climbing power. Appreciate anyones thoughts on the subject - Thanks Bud |

Bud - The real problem (besides heat) is torque. Look at your drivetrain in the 4104. It's Engine - Clutch - Transmission - Bevel Gears - Driveshaft - Rear Axle. When GMC was doing development work on the 8V71-powered V-drives, they kept blowing out the bevel gears, due to the higher torque output of the V-8 over the six. That's why they moved the bevels on the later model coaches, both sticks and autos. "New Look" transits and 4106s changed the stick drivetrain to: Engine - Clutch - Bevel Gears - Transmission - Driveshaft - Rear axle. In the automatic transits, the drive layout is: Engine - Bevel Gears - Torque Converter - Transmission - Driveshaft - Rear Axle. And, as has been mentioned elsewhere, this drivetrain layout change necessitated changing the pumpkin location on the rear axle - later models have it located on the curbside of the coach centerline. Not to say it can't be done, all it takes is $$$ OTOH, if you put a turbocharger on the 6-71, that would put you at about the same output as a stock 4106's 8V71, or roughly 275 hp. You still run the risk of the torque output overpowering the bevels, however, primarily in the lower gears. HTH. . . |
