Grasshopper is seeking knowledge :-)

Is there any website or other information repository containing data regarding the Scenicruisers history to current other than the basics.

My specific question deals with how many of the 1001 total made still survive today.

Thanks
Tom

Hey Tom,
Are you interested in owning one? They are special buses for sure, but not for the faint of heart. They are built with a lowered asile which makes for interesting choices if you are going to convert one like I am. Then there are those who are keeping them as seated coaches.

After talking to LOTS of people who own or have owned PD4501s, It seems that there are more surviving than appears (some will need to be brought back from the dead, but are worth it to some), with 8+ coming up for sale in the past few months & that's just the ones I heard about. I figure maybe 500 are still out there in some basic form. I have had friends tell me of many that are not listed on that registry. I also know of several running buses that aren't listed there either. Some owners like their privacy. Some aren't on the 'net.

The biggest enemy the non-runners have is the high price of scrap & the cost of towing one (that also helps save some in remote locations). Most scrap yards don't care about the history of these buses, they only care about the scrap $$$.

It also seems that they come up for sale in random spurts. There are 2 yahoo groups for scenicruisers - not real active, but they are populated by 4501 enthusiasts & have some great photos & info posted.

All of the owners I've met are Fantastic people.

Hey, Kyle!

Are you gonna bring your Scenic to Timmonsville along with your dad's S&S?
We could put it out in the field at no extra fee!

Hey Buswarrior,
That is a GREAT referral, thank you.
Do you or someone out there know the guy in Ohio with the Aero Coach + 4106?
The reason I am asking is two-fold, one I want to raise the roof on my MC6, secondly, look what is 4th in line behind the Scenics!

Hey Dallas, No scenic this trip for me.
I have many excuses, but the reason is it isn't ready for the road yet.

ADD is keeping me too distracted. What were we talking about?

Oh Yeah.....

Since some of the parts are quite difficult to obtain, I've been enjoying the hunt for those.

One day I'll run out of excuses & have to start work on her.

Kyle,

Yes, I am possibly interested in owning one, although as you mentioned, the lowered isle might cause me some difficulties in my conversion plans, which are odd enough as it is I assure you.
Just trying to futher educate myself on them, but should I decide one would work for me, I'm not scared of much :-)

I have heard of people lowering the floors in the Scenics to accomodate thier new interiors. I'm just snooping around trying to decide if it would be practical for my application, but I really do love the look of the old girls and would hate to see any more of these head to the scrapper. They are indeed beautiful classics from a better place in time. I looked through the entire registry last night and it was sad to see the ones in the scrap heap.

I remember back in the early 90's there was a guy who owned a bus scrapyard outside of Charlotte that had a running Scenic in his yard, although I never got the chance to check it out.

I used to live very close to you in SC, and was in your area every day. Now I'm up the road in Athens, GA. Maybe one day when I'm in the area I could sneak by and get a closer look at yours, if you would be so kind. And while I'm in the area, Bonnie Lou (my .38 cal) and I will be happy to take care of those pesky bus-bustin' bandits you were having a problem with, just my pleasure, no charge to you :-)

Thanks

Although they certainly are not as rare as GM Futureliners, the design of the Scenicruiser is every bit as unique. Can we be far from the day when a fully restored, seated PD4501 would be worth big bucks?

I was telling someone this morning that I saw one listed for sale on the registry for $290,000.00

I can't remember if it was a conversion or a seated coach fully restored in correct livery, but I can believe that oneday they will be able to comand that price or more. The Futurliner, now that's a museum piece for sure! :-)
