I lost a airbag on the trailing axle on my 84 MCI 9. Has anyone accomplished this repair? Looks like my biggest prob would be removing wheel. I suppose I could unload (switch off) and chain-up axle and get to a shop and get screwed or call Luke for parts and DIY. Any ideas. Phil9tx

There is just two bolts/nuts top and bottom and the airline. It's not a hard job. The bag will be about $175 or so from Luke. They just replaced my entire tag assembly and installed new bags.

You should check out this site. The best at showing how to do many repairs on the 9.

Hiya Phil.
I have been away from the board for months now, only because I've been so busy working on the coach & other stuff I had to force a self-imposed moratium on *the internet*!

Turns out I did not have to replace the bag but I have a new one ready to go when it's ready to go.

In any case, here's the direct link to gumpy's page where he discusses all you need to know about the procedure.

http://www.gumpydog.com/bus/MC9_WIP/Mechanical/Tag_Axle/tag_axle.htm

The one thing I've heard for sure is that you want to get new rings, bolts & nuts when you order the bag. The whole shebang is somewhat less than $100 from Mohawk.

Hope to get back on the board soon!

Hello Phil.

Easy work to change a tag spring. Sorry, the second letter of the alpha_et not working on key_oard. or last, or third last...darn kids spilled something.... new one tomorrow.

You must support the tag a_le somehow, do NOT let it hang from the shock, or you may get hurt.

You need a fine thread nut for the air spring to re-install.

Loosen wheel fasteners, sure wheel is loose, take the air off the tag spring with valve in side engine compartment, chain up the tag a_le, run it up on something, or use your jack, and start on the rusted fasteners, the air spring comes out easy. May need to whack or pry a little, lots worse work you could do!!!

If you drive with the tag chained up, put the air valve on again once chained up, and think hard to remove the tire, if it touches down, flat spot for sure. No air, the chain might come off on rough road...

happy coaching!
