I PUT new continental 22.5 20 ply all season tires on my bus last year and just noticed next to the psi rating on sidewall that it says max 55 mph...whats up with that...they can not mean that can they? |

My Goodyears are J rated and have a max. of 55 mph. The sidewalls and tread are so thick they don't dissipate the heat well. The only problem you'll have with the law is if you get stopped for a traffic infraction, and the "offending" officer notices, he'll give you a ticket for that also. Ed. |

Those tires are usually what you find on Transit buses. They never get higher than 55 and they brush curbs all the time Hence the thick sidewalls |

If it's 100 degrees in the shade and you're running 70 mph, you greatly increase the risk of losing one of these tires. If it's 50 degrees and raining, they'll stay cool. Heat buildup is what kills these. Paso is right - transit tires are what you got from the dealer. They have really thick sidewalls because transit drivers think that the curb is part of the braking system. Look closely at them - there should be a band around the tire at the widest point of the sidewall, and in that band there should be some dimples. Those dimples are sidewall wear indicators - in transit service, when they're gone, it's time to replace the tire. Looks like the tire dealer obviously sold you something he had in stock, not the correct tire for your coach. FWIW & HTH. . .
