I have a problem. The mechanic I use for a lot of the work on my bus has put me on the spot. He built and insalled a roll out tray for my house batteries, and when I asked him how much he said you decide! On the surface that sounds great but I don't want to insult or overpay him. My question is what have you paid for the same thing, 21" by 24", roller bearings, good job?

I don't have a clue as to how much, but that's my kind of guy - take good care of him.

Len
I hear the take care of him, but the cost of one of these things is high enough with out throwing extra money around.

If the design is simple, easy to fabricate suggest 3X cost of materials. If it's something custom and solves a problematical situation and works good (i.e. "trick") up to 10X depending on the overall quality.

Wayne,I think I would call the guy and ask him what he wants for doing the job,as this is his domain,if he gives you a good favorable price,I would pay him and get him a gift card for some restaraunt and tell him to have dinner on you,as you appreciate his work.....Dont know what the work is worth but go with your gut feelings you'll do O.K. Tell him that you have never built anything like that and you wouldn't know were to begin on a price. He needs to price it, not you. Marc is right and I know you don't want to give away money, but up to 10 times material cost is NOT unreasonable for a well built and designed product.

Take care of this Guy $$$ and he will probably help you out in a jamb.

Wayne, you might like to keep this guy around and you will loose him with a cheap out look. a guy that i know that does a lot of work for people in his machiine shop tells all the cheap people that he can not do it now as he is working on his wine. regardless what time of the year he tells them he is working on his wine which he makes. and this happens when someone trys to not over pay a couple dollars. remember his cost and time - did he go for the material , did he design it , did he do any travelling in his vec. did he pay for the material., did he do all the cutting and grinding, welding and drilling, what shop materials did he use were they his or did you supply? now rember that he has a lot of money invested in his tools, and grinders, chop saws , drill, welders and such wear out which is a cost that people do not see when they look at the finished item, so it works for us when some one comes around that tell us they are not cheap just FRUGAL we tell them it will be at least a week before we can work on it as we are working on Tony's wine. so i would say just ask him to give you a price then as stated give him some thing extra and you will still have him around the next time you need him instead of finding out that he has started to make wine.

Thanks everyone! We settled up and everything is cool. He wouldn't take my initial offer, said it was to high, so we settled for less. He's happy and I certainly am.

you were lucky this time, but,it could go the other way,get a price before the work starts (!), I recently had an exhaust gasket replaced, the mechanic quoted me 150.00,when I got in the office to pay,the girl said,"that will be 350.00"....I told her the mech. said 150.00 & she settled for that,
